Hello GATE Aspirants!

Congratulations on landing here.

You will find here a list of all the credible resources you must follow if you are genuinely
preparing for GATE XE. This is the list that I followed personally which helped me secure AIR
63 in 2020 and AIR 99 in 2019. You can target a better rank than me with your hard work and
determination.
WHICH SUBJECT TO CHOOSE?
Most Plastic Technology/Polymer Engineering and related branches students choose Material
Science (XE-C) and Polymer Science & Engineering (XE-F) as their 2 subjects from the available
options of XE (B to H). I would suggest you to opt for these 2, since there are some topics
common in syllabus of both these subjects.
Remember Engineering Mathematics (XE A) and General Aptitude is compulsory for all.
WHEN WILL BE THE EXAM?
5, 6 and 12, 13 February, 2022.

WHAT IS THE SYLLABUS FOR GATE XE 2022?

Engineering Mathematics: Engineering Mathematics Syllabus (click here)
General Aptitude: GA Syllabus (click here)
Polymer Science: Polymer Syllabus (click here)
Material Science: Material Science Syllabus (click here)
WHICH SOURCES TO FOLLOW?
Polymer Science:
1) Principles of Polymerization by George G. Odian Link of Book (Remember: You don’t
have to study the entire book. You must study only those topics which are mentioned
in the syllabus. Once you get into IITs, you will anyway study the entire book)
2) Polymer Science by V.R. Gowariker Link of Book (It is advisable to read this entire
book)
3) For Polymer Testing: You can either follow the book by Hanser Publication Link of
Book or Link of Book or Link of Book (Remember: Any one of these books would
work. Apart from these, you must know very clearly all the ASTM and ISO standards
of all basic plastic testing techniques which are available in Plastic Testing Handbooks)
4) For Polymer Characterization: You need not follow any specific book. Just the basic
knowledge of each technique is enough which you can learn from the following links:

videos on YouTube. Using the links that I provided, you can lead to the entire playlist
of that resource person.)
5) For plastic processing and manufacturing, basic knowledge of Injection, Extrusion,
Compression, Rotomolding, Blown Film, Blow molding and Thermoforming is enough.
Material Science:
1) Materials Science and Engineering: An introduction by William D Callister. (Again, you
don’t have to study the entire book, just the topics mentioned in the syllabus)
2) Solve all the numerical problems in the book and check your solutions here in the
solution manual

PRO TIP
Many people tend to skip Engineering mathematics section. IT IS WRONG. YOU MUST
ATTEMPT THAT SECTION. It is one of the most scoring sections in GATE. I can guarantee
you full marks in Mathematics section if you follow these below playlists thoroughly.

LASTLY,
Buy this book from Amazon. It will be worth your money and time.

Buy the latest version i.e. GATE 2021. It has SOLVED past year ENGINEERING SCIENCE
papers. And it is not too expensive.

GENERAL TIPS AND TRICKS

• Do not make any mistakes while filling the application form example in the
spelling of your name or roll number. Rectifying those changes later on takes a
great deal of time and sometimes the changes cant be mended.
• GATE 2022 will be designed by IIT Kharagpur which has a rich Material Science
Department. As per my understanding, you can expect a good XE-C question
paper.
• Revision is necessary. Maintain a separate notebook for all theorems and formula
and tricks.
• Keep practising the previous year papers. Many a times, the same concepts are
repeated.
• Ideal time for preparation is 10 moths. This time can be relative though. For
example: I took 6 months for preparation. My friend took 2 years. It all depends
on how well you manage your time and how disciplined you are.
• When you come near to your exam date, focus on your diet and sleep pattern.
Your diet plays a huge role in deciding your fatigue resistance and building your
stamina.
• What you study in 4 years of engineering should be very clear to you as GATE can
be easily cleared if your basics are clear. You don’t need high end knowledge.
STICK TO BASICS.
• The links that I provided might be of individual videos. You have to follow the
entire playlist!
• For my handwritten, personal notes, please follow me on Linkedin.
www.linkedin.com/in/mansi-sethi-903674136
• I wish to share my personal notes only with sincere candidates. I will upload them
on my google drive folder.
• LAST TIP: Life will change after IIT. It will build you on so many levels. It will open
the doors of millions of new opportunities that you might not have imagined so
far. So, give your life a chance to improve and explore.

Good luck!
Do not settle for less.
Be the best. Keep hustling.
