Welcome to the Dressmaking/Tailoring Grade 7 Self-Learning Module on


Parts and Functions of Manual Lock Stitch Sewing Machine!

Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,

to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

Head- is the complete sewing machine with no cabinet or stand.


1. Spool pin- the one that holds the thread.
2. Thread guide- maintains thread position.
3. Thread Take up Lever- releases bobbin thread and interlocks it.
4. Presser bar lifter- moves the presser foot.
5. Tension- controls thread looseness and tightness.
6. Thread guide 2- maintains thread position.
7. Needle clamp- holds the needle and tights it
8. Hook- is placed beside the needle clamp where the thread pass through.
9. Feed dog- shift the fabric as it stitches.
10. Presser foot- keeps the fabric in place when sewing.

11. Needle- is a slender device attached to the sewing needle brace.
12. Slide plate- is a movable shuttle and bobbin case board.
13. Balance wheel- sets up the system.
14. Stitch regulator- checks the thread length.
15. Bobbin winder- controls the coil whilst the thread is winding.
16. Arm- is the curve part which contains the needle operating mechanism.

17. Throat plate- is the feed dog's windows.
18. Bobbin- is a spool of metal for winding thread.
19. Bobbin case- holds the bobbin
20. Shuttle- holds bobbin case as you knit.
21. Belt- connects the balance wheel and the band wheel.

Cabinet – Holds the system head by interlocking the hinges with a bolt. It has
head mounting drawers and screw on the hinges.
Stand- Holds workplace. It consists of the following parts:
1. Band wheel- The balance wheel leads via the belt link.
2. Band wheel crank- shift the wheel
3. Pitman rod- Holds band drum crank treadle.
4. Belt guide- Holds its location in the belt
5. Belt shifter- Removes the tire loop.
