Revisiting/Debriefing After Each Drill

Monthly Fire Drill 3

All students and staff will be involved in the fire drills, lock downs, and evacuations. The

staff will be informed in half of the fire drills. The other fire drills will be a surprise. The lock

downs will be announced during that class period. They will each be a surprise. The staff will be

informed of the evacuation prior to that day. I will ask all staff to not share their knowledge of

the drills. All information will be emailed to the staff members before the end of the day. During

the next faculty meeting, we will discuss the results and any suggestions for improvement.

Rationale: Collaboration, Vision/Mission, Moral Legal Considerations

Developing the schedule for the school year, the Admin Team meets in the summer or

beginning of August to determine when the drills will take place. The district tries to do the drills

in each building on the same day, but if that does not work out, they try to do the drills the same

week.

The mission statement for our school states, “The mission of Tuscola Community Unit

School District is to provide a safe environment” [ CITATION Par20 \l 1033 ]. All the drills help

reinforce this mission statement. The principal and staff discussing the results afterwards will

improve the response to help keep the students and staff safe.

The moral and legal considerations in making these decisions in connection with the

calendar and safety drills is we want to make sure that our students are prepared to evacuate or

shelter, when needed. By doing all the drills, and having a record of them, it would help to

defend from a Tort or Negligence lawsuit. We always want to make sure that we are completing

all state required drills for those two reasons: student/staff safety and to defend litigation.
