Women empowerment refers to increasing the spiritual, political, social, educational, gender, or economic strength of women. It means granting women freedom of choice and equality in areas like social rights, political rights, and access to economic opportunities and resources. Women empowerment aims to address issues like gender discrimination, lack of education and healthcare access, and domestic violence that deprive women of decision-making power and freedom. Empowering women is necessary for entire societies to reach their full potential.

What is empowerment?

“Empowerment is the process of increasing the capacity of individuals or


groups to make choices and to transform those choices into desired actions
and outcomes.”

What is women empowerment?

1. Women Empowerment refers to increasing the spiritual, political,


social, educational, gender, or economic strength of individuals and
communities of women.
2. Women empowerment means freedom of women from the vicious
grips of social, economical, political, caste and gender-based
discrimination.
3. It means granting women the freedom to make life choices.
4. Women Empowerment itself elaborates that Social Rights, Political
Rights, Economic stability, judicial strength and all other rights should
be also equal to women

Women empowerment 5 components:

1. Women's sense of self-worth;


2. Their right to have and to determine choices;
3. Their right to have access to opportunities and resources;
4. Their right to have the power to control their own lives, both within
and outside the home;
5. And their ability to influence the direction of Social change to create a
more just social and economic order, nationally and internationally.

Present Situation of women:

1. About 66% of the female population in rural area is unutilized. This is


mainly due to existing social customs.
2. In agriculture & animal care the women contribute 90% of the total
work force. Women constitute almost half of the population, perform
nearly 2/3rd of its work hours, receive 1/10th of the world’s income &
own less than 1/100th of the world property.
3. Among the world’s 900 million illiterate people, women out number
men two to one. 70% of people living in poverty are women.

Why need of women empowerment?

The main problems that were faced by women in past days (and still today
up to some extent):

1. Gender discrimination
2. Woman education
3. Female infanticide
4. Dowry
5. Marriage in same caste and child marriage(still existing)
6. Atrocities on Women: Raped, kicked, killed, subdued & humiliated
almost daily.

Need for women empowerment:

 WOMEN ARE DEPRIVED OF:

1. Decision Making Power


2. Freedom of Movement
3. Access to Education
4. Access to Employment
5. Exposure to Media
6. Domestic Violence

Women Empowerment in the light of Quran:

“And for women are rights over men similar to those of men over women”
(Noble Quran 2:228)

"O mankind! Verily we have created you from a single (pair) of a male and
female, and made you into nations and tribes that you may know each
other." (Al-Hujraat 49:13)

1. Equal rights
2. Equal responsibilities
3. Equally accountable to God in glorifying and worshipping
4. Area of action for women

DIMENSIONS OF WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

1. Women empowerment has multiple interrelated and independent


dimensions focus the main areas as follows-
 Women’s political and legal empowerment.
 Women’s economic and social empowerment.

PRINCIPLES OF WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

1. Establish high-level corporate leadership for gender equality


2. Treat all women and men fairly at work - respect and support human
rights and nondiscrimination
3. Ensure the health, safety and well-being of all women and men
workers • Promote education, training and professional development
for women
4. Implement enterprise development, supply chain and marketing
practices that empower women
5. Promote equality through community initiatives and advocacy
6. Measure and publicly report on progress to achieve gender equality

CONCLUSION

1. Women represent half of the world’s population and gender inequality


exists in every nation on the planet.
2. Until women are given the same opportunities that men are, entire
societies will be destined to perform below their true potentials.
3. The greatest need of the hour is change of social attitude to women.
4. The dream of women empowerment shall not be fulfill unless they are
empowered to play equal decisive and appropriate role in the family,
which is the basic unit of empowerment.
