They will choose a job they see in their neighborhood and write a story about that role. The teacher will meet with each pair to provide support and ensure they are on track. Students will then present their storybooks to the class and discuss the different careers in the community. Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☐ Remembering ☐ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating ☒ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. All products of learning are unique and
personalized. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator walking around monitoring the student-led
activity.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

 The guidelines for this assignment are very open-ended, so students have the option of how they will
achieve their final product of a non-fiction story. Students are choosing their story topic based on a
broad topic given by the teacher.
 Students will be working in pairs, and there will be individualized instruction for each pair by the
teacher. The teacher will assess the students’ progress and will assist if the students are struggling.
 Students will eb producing the product online using PowerPoint, and they will have access to speech-
to-text software and enlarged keyboards. Students also have the option of finding pictures online
(heavily monitored by school system/teacher) or drawing their own pictures that can then be added
into the PowerPoint. Students are also able to record themselves reading their story and explaining
the pictures or they can present the story to the class.

Lesson idea implementation:

In this lesson, students will be creating a digital storybook about their choice of a career they see in
their neighborhood and the world around them. Teacher will introduce the topic by discussing the
different jobs each of the students’ parents have and how they contribute to society. Then, Teacher
will read the People in Our Neighborhood digital storybook to the students. Students will then be put
into pairs where they will choose a career and create a story (minimum of 3 pages) about that career.
Teacher will conduct individualized meetings with each of the pairs to ensure the students are on the
right track and to assist if needed. If a pair of students finishes their story book before the other pairs,

they are welcome to research a different career. To conclude the lesson, the students will share their
stories to the class and have a discussion of the different careers that are all useful to our community.

Reflective Practice:
After the implementation of this lesson, the students have not only improved their technological fluency in
using PowerPoint, but they have also developed the starting of research skills. Some students may have
struggled with PowerPoint, but more and more students are developing their skills in technology at an early
age. To extend this lesson, the students’ digital storybooks could be added to the class website where parents
are able to view their students’ work. Additionally, we could invite parents of different careers to come in and
explain their day-to-day life to the students.
