Composing Clear and Coherent Sentences Using Appropriate

Grammatical Structures: Conjunctions

Background Information:
As you shift to a more complex English subject in High School next school year, it is
essential for you to be able to communicate your ideas and thoughts clearly in both written
and oral language. Sentences with clarity, unity, and emphasis is one way to ensure success
in communicating yourself.

You will come across words in the English language which act as connectors of ideas
in composing sentences. Ideas which are connected properly sound pleasant and clear.
These connectors are called conjunctions.

A conjunction is a word connector or a joining word. We use conjunctions to join two

words, phrases, and clauses to make one long sentence.

There are two types of conjunctions:

A. Coordinating Conjunctions
B. Subordinating Conjunctions

In this Learning Activity Sheet, you will learn to identify the first type of conjunction
which is the coordinating conjunctions and how to appropriately use them in composing clear
and coherent sentences.

Coordinating Conjunctions join words, phrases or group of words which are equal
or similar. They give equal importance to the words they connect such as:

Words: Phrases:
Pollution and waste Quite expensive yet long lasting
DVD player, television or phone The washing machine nor the air conditioner
simple but elegant In the bathroom or in the swimming pool

Sentences:
Coal may be cheap, but the environmental costs are high.
Avoid washing clean water, for it might become a luxury in the future

1
There are seven coordinating conjunctions, and they can be easily remembered
through the acronym “FANBOYS” which stands for: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, and So. Each
of them has its own use. Study the table below.

Conjunction Use Example

We buy purified water, for we don’t
for Shows reason or purpose
drink tap water
and Adds similar items or ideas I love fruit juice and shake.
Connects non-contrasting
nor I am not a student nor a worker.
negative ideas
Joins contrasting ideas or The manager is strict but friendly.
but
exceptions all the girls but Tricia
or Joins alternative ideas or items the lightning or the thunder
yet Shows contrast so near yet so far
Boil the tap water so it will be safer to
so Shows a result or consequence
drink

In using coordinating conjunctions, remember the following guidelines:

1. A comma is placed before the coordinating conjunction when the conjunction connects
two independent clauses. A clause consists of a subject and a verb and it can be an
independent or dependent clause. Study the venn diagram below:

Independent (main) Dependent

 expresses a  has incomplete thought
clause
complete thought
with  cannot stand alone as a
 can stand alone subject sentence
(s) and
Example: Example:
verb (v)
Mom uses cloth towels that Mom uses
S V S V

Note that when two independent clauses are joined by coordinating conjunctions, it forms
a compound sentence.

2. A comma is not used when using a coordinating conjunction to connect two objects.
However, if more than two objects are connected, a comma is placed before the
coordinating conjunction.

Example: I use soap or detergent for laundry

We must avoid disposable cups, plate, or cutlery.

2
Here are more examples of coordinating conjunctions. Read them and try to get
familiar with the structure of the sentences. Notice that commas are added in Items 3-7.

1. A bowl of ‘ginataan’ is sweet and delicious.

2. A hot ‘lomi’ can be eaten using a fork or spoon.
3. Mona went to school, but no one was there.
4. I don’t waste a single drop of my vitamins, for it is expensive.
5. Lily ignored her ice cream, so I ate it myself.
6. My lola doesn’t love yellow, yet she always waters her sunflowers in the garden.
7. Tonny doesn’t like to eat seashells, nor does he touch it on the table.

Coordinating conjunctions will not be difficult to understand if you keep in mind the
acronym “FANBOYS.”
