Tutorial 2 15 June 2021)

This document provides a tutorial with 11 practice problems related to fluid mechanics concepts like force, mass, density, specific weight, and specific gravity. Students are asked to calculate values like the mass of an object given its weight, the weight of a volume of liquid with a known mass, the force required to lift a metric ton, an object's density given its specific weight, and other fluid properties for various liquids and objects based on measurements of volume, mass, specific gravity, and other given values. The problems cover fundamental calculations and conversions between units for key fluid mechanics quantities.

TUTORIAL 2

Force and Mass

1. Calculate the mass of a can of oil if it weighs 610 N.
2. Calculate the weight of 1m3 of kerosene if it has a mass of 825 kg.
3. The metric ton is 1000 kg (mass). Compute the force in Newtons
required to lift it.
4. Determine your weight in N and your mass in kg.

Density, Specific Weight, and Specific Gravity

5. Air at 16°C and standard atmospheric pressure has a specific
weight of 12.02 N/m3. Calculate its density.
6. A cylindrical can 150 mm in diameter is filled to a depth of 100 mm
with a fuel oil. The oil has a mass of 1.56 kg. Calculate its density,
specific weight, and specific gravity.
7. The fuel tank of an automobile holds 0.095 m3. If it is full of
gasoline having a specific gravity of 0.68, calculate the weight of
the gasoline.
8. Liquid ammonia has a specific gravity of 0.826. Calculate the
volume of ammonia that would weigh 22.0 N.
9. Methyl alcohol has a specific gravity of 0.789. Calculate its density
and its specific weight.
10. A storage vessel for gasoline (sg = 0.68) is a vertical cylinder
10 m in diameter. If it is filled to a depth of 6.75 m, calculate the
weight and mass of the gasoline.
11. A rock has a specific gravity of 2.32 and a volume of 1.42 X
10 m3. How much does it weigh?
