IMPROVEMENT OF STREETSCAPE
IN FOCUS________(name of street)__________, MANILA
The street is a very important element of a city. Metaphorically, the streets are the arteries and veins of
the city where growth and existence depend on it. There are many literatures and overlapping principles
formulated by urban design proponents leading to the design of beautiful streets. Earlier principles were
focused on the physical or tangible aspects of designing the streets. In the later period, street designs
were focused on the intangibles-on the socio-physical connection of the streets as a space in place-making
and sense of place. Streets can serve as memory lane where the street edge or the building elevations,
together with the street elements and details, served as canvasses for historical imprints. One can admire
the continuity and change that took place in the city by walking along the street. Good design of street
can also perk-up economy. Beautiful streets are tourist destinations. Businesses thrive because of well-
planned connections of street networks. In recent times, the environmental factors are added in the
design of the street to mitigate climate. Treatment of streets to lessen urban heat island effect, design of
street to conserve water and design of street to lessen pollution are some involvement of street design.
