Experiment 9
Abstract
In this exercise, acid- base titrations were used to determine the molar concentration and m/v %
of acetic acid in vinegar, with the aid of a 2 mL pipet and a burette. We used the buret in two
trials to pour the solution in an Erlenmeyer flask to find the equivalence point. Our initial volume
was 0.15 mL and 17.00 mL and the final volume were 16.85 mL and 34.00 mL. Based on these
findings, it was determined that the average molarity and m/v %, using findings from two trials,
were 0.82 M and 4.92%. This was determined by using the volume of the NaOH solution from

Note that this information should also be in your lab notebook.
1. Write the concentration of NaOH (including units) used in the experiment in the
space provided. Fill in Table 1 with the initial and final volume readings on the buret for
each trial. Enter each number with the correct number of significant figures and units
(in each cell).
Trial 1 Trial 2
2. Fill in Table 2 with the calculated amounts of moles of NaOH, molarity of acetic acid
and mass/volume percent of acetic acid. Enter each number with the correct number of
significant figures and units (in each cell).

3. In the space provided, show your calculation of the moles of NaOH, the molarity of
acetic acid and the mass/volume percent of acetic acid for one trial.
4. Write the final results averaged over the two trials in Table 3. Enter each number
with the correct number of significant figures and units (in each cell).

Answer the following reflection questions in the space provided. These do not need to
be in your lab notebook.
Question 1. Write the ionic equation for the reaction of acetic acid with sodium
hydroxide and identify the spectator ion(s). Write the net ionic equation.
Question 2.
How does obtaining a dark pink endpoint (instead of a pale pink endpoint) affect the
calculated mass/volume percent of acetic acid in vinegar compared to the actual value?
Is the calculated mass/volume percent greater than, less than or equal to the actual
value? Explain.

Question 3.
Will the volume of water added in step 6 of the lab procedure affect the calculated
value of the mass/volume percent of acetic acid in vinegar? Explain.
Yes because it adds to the volume of the sample and therefore, water affects the
result of the experiments whenever we calculate volume.
Question 4.
A 25.00 mL sample of vinegar requires 14.21 mL of 0.892 M Ba(OH)2 to be neutralized.
Calculate the molarity and the mass/volume of acetic acid in the vinegar solution.
