LESSON-EXEMPLAR in Science 4

The document provides a lesson plan on conductors and insulators of heat and electricity for 5th grade science. The objectives are to explain why good electrical conductors conduct heat efficiently, show the importance of heat and electricity in everyday life, and provide examples of good insulators and conductors. The lesson includes activities identifying good conductors, a pre-test and post-test, and a discussion of how metals conduct due to free-moving electrons while insulators lack free electrons.

5. It was first time for Lance using an electric oven, he used a
plastic container in baking brownies. What will happen to the
plastic container inside the oven?
A. The brownies were baked very well because the plastic
have freely moving electrons that can transfer thermal energy
quickly and easily.
B. It make the brownies become half baked.
C. The plastic container melted because plastic is a property of
insulators and not a good conductor of heat.
D. Nothing will happen.

WHAT IS IT?
Motive Question

 Why do we need to use pot holder when holding cooking

pots/tray when cooking?

 Should we use our bare hands when punching metals in

electric socket? Why or why not?
Presentation of the Lesson

Discussion of the Lesson

It is difficult to observe directly how heat and electricity move through

materials because they move through tiny particles of matter called
molecules. The molecules are made up of tiniest particles of
matter called atoms.

Metals are made up of atoms with free moving electrons. Electrons

are the negatively charged particles with other electrons. The
electrons are loosely arranged, that they can collide and move freely
back and forth conducting heat and electricity.

Copper is a metal that is commonly used in electrical wires because

of its high conductivity. It is the most common electrical wire that can
easily be connected by soldering and clamping. Your body and other
metallic materials can be conductors of electricity because of the
presence of water and minerals.
Thermal conductivity measures the ability of a metal to conduct
heat.

This property varies across different types of metal and is important to

consider in applications where high operating temperatures are
common.

In pure metals, thermal conductivity stays roughly the same with

increases in temperature.

Conductors are materials that allow electricity and heat to flow freely
through them, allowing electricity and heat to be transferred from the
source through them.

IRON, GOLD, SILVER, BRASS, STEEL, COPPER, NICKEL, and

WATER are examples of conductors of heat and electricity.

The best electrical conductor, under the conditions of ordinary

temperature and pressure, is the metallic silver.

SILVER is not always an ideal choice as a material because it is

expensive and susceptible to tarnishing.

COPPER WIRES are widely used for electrical wiring because they
are ductile and are good conductors of electricity, while steel
aluminums are good conductors of heat and electricity.

METALS are good conductors of heat and electricity because of its

high thermal conductivity. Copper and aluminum are metals. Stainless
steel is an iron-based metal with chromium.

COOKING POTS and PANS made of metals make cooking faster

because they quickly allow heat transfer from the flame to the food
being cooked.

Remember: Not all materials are good conductor of heat and

electricity.
Insulators are the materials that are non-conductors or do not allow
the heat and electricity to pass through.

They don’t have free electrons which is the main reason why they
resist conducting electricity.

They are made of plastic, silk, leather, glass, oil and rubber materials.
