HW2 Solution

This document outlines the problems for homework assignment #2 in the fluid mechanics course MAEG3030. It includes 5 problems related to fluid dynamics, hydraulics, and fluid flow. The problems involve calculating speeds and forces for objects in fluid flow, determining flow rates and temperature changes, finding streamlines, and checking if a given velocity field represents an incompressible flow. Solutions are not provided.

MAEG3030: Fluid Mechanics

HW #2 (Due on 6/3/2019, Friday)

1. (25 points) A cart is propelled by a hydraulic catapult starting from rest. The
jet strikes the curved surface and makes a 180o turn, leaving horizontally. Air
and rolling resistance may be neglected. If the mass of the cart is 100 kg and the
jet of water leaves the nozzle (area 0.001 m2) with a speed of 35 m/s.
1) Determine the speed of the cart 5 s after the jet is directed against the cart.
2) Plot the cart speed as a function of time. (You may need to use Excel or
MATLAB)

Solution:

2. (25 points) A horizontal circular jet of air strikes a stationary flat plate. The jet
velocity is 100 m/s and the jet diameter is 20 mm. Ignore the weights of plate
and fluid. If the air velocity magnitude remains constant as the air flows over
the plate surface in the directions shown, determine:
1) The magnitude of FA, the anchoring force required to hold the plate
stationary;
2) The ratio of the flow rates in the V2 and V3 directions, Q2/Q3.
3) The magnitude of FA, that is required to allow the plate to move to the right
at a constant speed of 10 m/s.

3. (15 points) Compressed air is stored in a pressure bottle with a volume of 100
L, at 500 kPa and 293 K. At a certain instant, a valve is opened and mass flows
from the bottle at a mass flow rate of 0.01 kg/s. Find the rate of change of
temperature in the bottle at this instant.
Given: gas constant of air, Rair = 287 J/kg·K; specific heat capacity of air, cv =
718 J/kg.
Solution:

4. (20 points) The y-component of velocity in a steady, incompressible flow field in

the xy plane is v = −0.2xy3, m/s; here x and y are measured in meters.
1) Find the simplest x-component of velocity for this flow field;
2) Find the equation of the streamlines for this flow field (Hint: given the
equation of a streamline is dy/dx = v/u);
3) Plot the streamlines through points (1,4) and (2,4).
Solution:

5. (15 points) Consider the velocity field V = A(x4-6x2y2+y4)i + A(4xy3-4x3y)j in the

xy plane, where A = 0.25 m-3s-1, and the coordinates are measured in meters. Is
this a possible incompressible flow field? Calculate the acceleration of a fluid
particle at point (x,y) = (1,1).
