ALGEBRA – EXERCISE 2

NAME: Rainer Mar Bacus

DIRECTIONS: Please show the complete solution after each problem. Use Calibri 12. Submission is on
Monday May 18, 2020.
1. Sarah leaves Seattle for New York in her car, averaging 80 mph across open country. One hour
later a plane leaves Seattle for New York following the same route and flying 400 mph. How
long will it be before the plane overtakes the car?

Time Rate Distance

Car x+1 80 80 (x+1)
Plane x 400 400x

80(x + 1) = 400x

80x + 80 = 400x

-320x = -80

x = ¼ or 0.25 hour (answer)

2. A train averaging 50 mph leaves San Francisco at I P.M. for Los Angeles 440 miles away. At the
same time a second train leaves Los Angeles headed for San Francisco on the same track and
traveling at an average rate of 60 mph. At what times does the accident occur?

Time Rate Distance

Train from SF x 50 50x
Train from LA x 60 60x

50x = train from San Francisco

60x = train from Los Angeles

60x + 50 x = 440

110x = 440

x = 4 hours (answer)

3. Mr. Kasberg rides his bike at 6 mph to the bus station. He then rides the bus to work,
averaging 30 mph. If he spends 20 minutes less time on the bus than on the bike, and the
distance from his house to work is 26 miles, what is the distance from his house to the bus
station?
Time Rate Distance
Bike x 6 6x
Bus x - 1/3 30 30(x – 1/3)

6x = time on bike
30(x – 1/3) – time on bus

6x + 30(x – 1/3) = 26

6x + 30x – 10 = 26

36x = 36
x = 1 hour

4. Two planes leave Kansas City at I P.M. Plane A heads east at 450 mph and plane B heads due
west at 600 mph. How long will it be before the planes are 2100 miles apart?

Time Rate Distance

Plane A x 450 450x
Plane B x 600 600x

450x = Plane A
600x = Plane B

450x + 600x = 2100

1050x = 2100

x = 2 hours (answer)

5. Doomtown is 200 miles due west of Sagebrush, and Joshua is due west of Doomtown. At 9
A.M. Mr. Archer leaves Sagebrush for Joshua. At I P.M. Mr. Sassoon leaves Doomtown for
Joshua. If Mr. Sassoon travels at an average speed 20 mph faster than Mr. Archer and they
each reach Joshua at 4 P.M., how fast is each traveling?

Time Rate Distance

Mr. Archer 7 x 7x
Mr. Sassoon 3 x + 20 30(x – 1/3)

x = Mr. Archer
x + 20 = Mr. Sassoon
7x = 3x + 60 +200

4x = 260

x = 65 mph

x + 20 = 85 mph (answers)

6. A florist wishes to make bouquets of mixed spring flowers. Each bouquet is to be made up of
tulips at $30 a bunch and daffodils at $21 a bunch. How many bunches of each should she use
to make 15 bunches which she can sell for $24 a bunch?
A = Tulips
B = Daffodils

A + B = 15
A = 15 – B

30 (15 – B) + 21B = 360

450 – 30B + 21B = 360

-9B = -90

B = 10

A = 15 – 10
A=5

Tulips = 5; Daffodils = 10 (answers)

7. A farmer has 100 gallons of 70% pure disinfectant. He wishes to mix it with disinfectant which
is 90% pure in order to obtain 75% pure disinfectant. How much of the 90% pure disinfectant
must he use?

100 gallons of 70% disinfectant

(?) 90% disinfectant
_________________________
75% disinfectant

100 x 70 + 90x = 75 (100 + x)

7000 + 90x = 7500 + 75x

90x – 75x = 7500 – 7000

15x = 500

X = 33.33 or 33 1/3 gallons (answer)

8. If an alloy containing 30% silver is mixed with a 55% silver alloy to get 800 pounds of 40% alloy,
how much of each must be used?

X = 30% silver alloy

800 – x = 55% silver alloy

.30x + .55(800 – x) = .40(800)

.30x + 440 - .55x = 320
-.25x = -120
x = 480

800 – 480 = 320

480lbs of 30% silver alloy and 320lbs of 55% silver alloy (answers)

9. Russ discovers at the end of the summer that his radiator antifreeze solution has dropped
below the safe level. If the radiator contains 4 gallons of a 25% solution, how many gallons of
pure antifreeze must he add to bring it up to a desired 50% solution? (Assume there is room to
add antifreeze without removing any solution.)

0.25(4) + x = 0.50(x + 4)

1.00 + x = 0.50x + 2.00

100 + 100x = 50x + 200

x = 2 (answer)

10. A store manager wishes to reduce the price on her fresh ground coffee by mixing two grades.
If she has 50 pounds of coffee which sells for $10 per pound. how much coffee worth $6 per
pound must she mix with it so that she can sell the final mixture for $8.50 per pound?

50(10) + 6x = 8.50(50 + x)

500 + 6x = 425 + 8.50x

500 + 60x = 425 + 85x

-15x = -75

x = 30 pounds of $6 coffee (answer)
