Pepper spray causes inflammation when it makes contact with a person, which can immediately incapacitate them, while mace is similar to tear gas in that it causes irritation but not inflammation. When using pepper spray for self defense, get one with a strong propellant so you don't need to be close to an attacker, as pepper spray may not always immediately incapacitate them. Always be aware of your surroundings and spray then run away while calling for help if you need to use pepper spray.

and Mace is classified as an irritant. Mace is similar in classification to tear gas, which
causes irritation of the eyes and face without causing another reaction. Pepper spray
causes inflammation, which can immediately incapacitate anyone with whom it makes
contact.)

Make sure you get really strong propellant, so that you don’t have to be very near an
attacker for it to work. A pepper stray, regardless of how strong it is, will not incapacitate
an attacker immediately (or in some cases, at all). Just spray it and run away as fast as
you can while shouting for help as loud as possible in order to attract attention from other
people.

Always be aware of your surroundings.
