Mathematics: Quarter 3: Week 4 (Week 6) Learning Activity Sheet

This document provides a learning activity sheet on mathematics for 10th grade students. It covers the topics of events, union, and intersection of events. Examples are given to illustrate these concepts. Students are asked to find the intersection and union of events in various problems and draw Venn diagrams to represent the solutions. Rubrics are provided to evaluate the diagrams. At the end, students are asked to reflect on how these concepts apply to daily life. An answer key is also included.

Section: Quarter 3 – Week 4 (Week 6)

Events, Union and Intersection of Events

Background Information

Event means one or more outcomes. The set of all possible outcomes of the event is
called sample spaces. Each element in the sample spaces is called sample point.

Examples of events

1. Rolling a die. (possible outcomes are 1,2,3,4,5,6)

2. Tossing a coin. (possible outcomes are H-head and T-tail)

Since events are sets, they can be combined to form a new event by using the set
operations of union and intersection.

Union (∪) is the set made by combining the elements of two sets.

Example:

Soccer = {Alex, Hunter, Casey, Drew}

Tennis = {Casey, Drew, Jade}
Soccer ∪ Tennis = {Alex, Hunter, Casey, Drew, Jade}

Therefore, the union of the "Soccer" and "Tennis" sets is

Alex, Hunter, Casey, Drew and Jade.

Intersection (∩) is two sets which has only the elements common to both sets.

We will use same example in the union for us to easily understand the nature of intersection of sets.

Example:

Soccer = {Alex, Hunter, Casey, Drew}

Tennis = {Casey, Drew, Jade}
Soccer ∩ Tennis = {Casey, Drew}

Therefore, the intersection of the “Soccer” and “Tennis”

sets is Casey and Drew.

UNION OF EVENTS

The union of events can be illustrated by means of a Venn Diagram.

Example 1: A die is tossed.

Sample Space S = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}
Let A = event that an odd number occurs.
B = event that a number is greater than 4 occurs.
1
Determine the elements of A and B. Then find A∪B and draw a Venn diagram to illustrate A∪B.

Solution:

A = {1, 3, 5} Venn diagram:

B = {5, 6}
A ∪ B = {1, 3, 5, 6}

The two events A and B are represented by two

circles and the sample spaces S is represented
by the rectangle.

Example 2: Given the Venn Diagram, determine the elements of A and B. Then find A∪B.

A B S
92
89 90
97 94 88 93 96
87 99
98
82 86

85 91
Solution:

A = {82, 87, 88, 89, 94, 99}

B = {86, 88, 90, 93, 96, 98, 99}
A ∪ B = {82, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 93, 94, 96, 98, 99}

INTERSECTION OF EVENTS

Two events A and B intersect if there are elements common to both A and B.

Example 3: A die is rolled.

Sample space is S = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}
Let A = event that an even number turns.
B = event that the number that turns up is greater than 2.
a. Find A ∩ B.
b. Draw a Venn diagram to illustrate A ∩ B.

Solution:

a. A = {2, 4, 6} b.
B = {3, 4, 5, 6}
Thus, A ∩ B = {4, 6}

2
Example 4: Given the Venn Diagram, determine the elements of S, A and B. Then find A ∩ B.

A B

Solution:

S = {Hotdog Sandwich, Magic Flakes, Nova, Piatos, Siomai, Sunflower}

A = {Magic Flakes, Piatos, Nova}
B = {Magic Flakes, Sunflower}
A ∩ B = {Magic Flakes}

Learning Competency with code:

Illustrate events, and union and intersection of events. (M10SP-IIIf-1)

General Directions:

Read carefully the directions indicated in the following activity, then, provide what is needed
or asked each item. Write the answers on a separate sheet of paper.

Activity 1:

Find the intersection of events A and B and draw a Venn Diagram in each item. For Venn diagram,
refer to the rubric below.
1. 3.
2. 1.4. Sample Space = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9}
A = {2, 4, 6}
