This lab report describes an experiment to determine soil intake characteristics using a cylinder infiltrometer. The objectives were to measure infiltration rates over time, plot the data on semi-log graph paper to determine constants c and n, and develop equations for accumulated, average, and instantaneous intake rates. Tests were conducted in field using a double ring infiltrometer, measuring bridge, and stopwatch. Data was collected on water level readings over time differences and used to calculate infiltration depth, rates, and plot graphs of ln(Fp-Fc) vs time and accumulated depth, average, and instantaneous intake rates vs time. The results found constants n=-9.3361 and c=2.9929, showing the soil had

Experiment no: 03.
Experiment Name: Determination of Soil Intake Characteristics using Cylinder
Infiltrometer.

Objective:
1. To familiarize with the field testing procedure.
2. To plot accumulated depth Vs. time in a Semi-log paper and to find ,
a. The constant,C
b. The exponent, n
3. To develop the equations for accumulated intake, average and instantaneous
intake rates from the test data.
4. To plot accumulated depth, average and instantaneous intake rate Vs. time in one
plain.
5. graph paper.

Apparatus:
1. Double ring infiltrometer.
2. Driving plate.
3. Hammer.
4. Measuring bridge.
5. Measuring rod.
6. Sponge.
7. Stopwatch.

Sample Calculation:
For time difference =2 min,
Cumulative time = 2 min.
Here,
Water level readings,
Before 92 mm
After 100 mm
So, Infiltration depth = (100-92) = 8 mm.
Cumulative infiltration = 8 mm.

Cumulativeinfiltration 8
∴Avg. Infiltration rate = = = 4 mm/min.
Time difference 2

Infiltration depth 8
∴ Instantaneous infiltration rate = = = 4 mm/min.

Discussion:
This experiment is to determine the Soil Intake Characteristics using Cylinder
Infiltrometer. Soil intake characteristic gives us information about the rate of entry of
water into soil to avoid excess irrigation or shortage of irrigation. From graph pattern, we
found that, initially
Infiltration rate is high but as time increases, the value decreases, on the other hand,
cumulative rate increases. As cumulative rate is associated with average rate, it also
increases. So, my experiment value shows predictable infiltration facility.
