A pleasant morning to each and every one!

We are the group 5 and today we are going

to discuss about service learning. But before anything else, let me read to you first the
objectives.

 Discuss Service Learning as an  instructional strategy

 Explain how Service Learning is used in  elementary social studies instruction
 Develop a lesson plan that uses Service  Learning in elementary social studies

What is service learning?

 Service learning is “a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful

community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning
Experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.”
So kini diayng service learning kay usa ka teaching strategy where in ang
students or ang learners kay makalearn ug theories sa classroom and at the
same time volunteers and engages into community activities to depeen their
understanding. Kini usab kay makahatag sa mga students ug purpose and
motivate themselves to do good. Madevelop sad ani ang ilahang critical, social,
communication and creativity sa mga students.
 It is different from volunteerism and community service. Why? Well because,
aside from providing relevant and meaningful civic involvement, it targets the
acquisition of specific knowledge, skills, and values.
 It ensures that students learn the social studies content through
active participation in community service. As you can see in service learning,
active siya dili passive. Dili ang learners diring dapita maglingkod lang, magtan
aw lang, maminaw lang. Kundili active sila, mulihok sila. active silang
muparticpate ug muserbisyo sa community.

 It is founded on the philosophical roots of the experiential learning theory of

Dewey (1938), Freire (1970), and Kolb (1984).
 Through this strategy, students are actively involved in a
concrete experience, encouraged to do a reflective  observation, and expected to
integrate  abstract concepts that they learned in  the classroom to understand their
experience. It is an experiential learning strategy. This can benefit the learners in many
ways, may it be their learning, personal,
Social, career development and their relationship towards the community.
4 BASIC STEPS IN IMPLEMENTING SERVICE LEARNING ACCORDING TO
GEIGER AND WADE

1. Preparation- this involves providing students with the necessary skills and information
for the projects. Kay students’ needs some background before their main interaction
with the selected community. Kaning preparation kay pwede ni sa pamaagi ba ron sa
discussion, brainstorming, journal writing, or through watching video ba.

2. Action or service- after orienting students and seeking their commitment, the project
is commenced and actualized. Action is the actual interaction/service performed by the
students. It can be brief or long. Anhi na mugawa ir mahitabo ang kung unsa ilahang gi
