Abstract
Globally researchers have deliberated on two distinctive modes of educational learning system
trying to show and prove which one is most effective and better. Beside this there are different
arguments discussing that online is beneficial learning system used to assess the overall teaching
and learning components, while other argued traditional is more effective in this regard. On the
other hand some put forward that the crossbreed manner of both system will be the most preferred
and industrious content delivery system for students. Conversely, students’ perceptions in the
perspective of online learning as compared to traditional are largely disregarded. Keeping in view
the growing need of online courses and the established involvement among student perceptions of
learning atmospheres and academic effects. The objective of this study is to conduct student
perception survey in order to investigate the facts towards the online and traditional learning
systems for which main campus of Sarhad University of Science and Information Technology
Peshawar, Pakistan was selected. During the work a total number of 250 full time regular students
of various department were asked to complete an opinionative regarding their views on the
perceptions for taking online versus traditional learning and sought to determine some reasons for
their preferences. For analyzing the survey results a familiar statistical data analyzing test ANOVA
was used to analyze the research findings. The findings of survey showed that majority of students
agreed with traditional way of learning with standpoint of social and cultural influences. They also
compared both the learning opportunities with time and global perspective. Similarly some portion
of students found the traditional learning most comprehensive and specific as compare to online
learning.
Chapter 1
Introduction
Presently improvement in online learning has yielded numerous remuneration, mostly in higher
education. Now the students have the opportunity and more options especially in undergraduate
programs educational system whether it could be in the form of traditional format or a virtual
world online, or a hybrid of the these two alternatives [7]. Various educations institutions now
offer a number of different courses both in the traditional and online format. To gauge the
efficiency of the education and learning progression, various surveys pertaining to student
perception are becoming necessary for administrative decision review which can be achieved by
using student preferences. According to Otani, Joon Kim and Cho (2012) the necessary feedback
from students will have bang on the adjustment, renovation and perfection in teaching
methodology. Kuhtman (2004) pointed out the possible advantages of online learning appraisals,
that include time and cost and obviously online learning opportunities have the facilities to put
aside time and cost, as compared to the traditional way of learning. Such feedback from students
regarding comparison between online and traditional ways of learning can be used to improve the
teaching and learning process which may result in creating a high quality teaching and learning
process in educational institutions by introducing the new and modern improvement with updated
technology [9]. The goal of the current work is to look into the perception of students towards
online and traditional learning system based on a survey which may help the concern
administration to set up more competent and consistent tool of assessment for all educational
institutions in Pakistan. Although past progress regarding online learning has based on computer-
based evaluation support for teaching and learning (Marsh et al., 2013; Ravelli, 2000; Lovric et al.,
connection between traditional learning and online system. For instance many lecturers pertaining
modify their traditional methods in delivering lectures as they reject to depart the console zone of
MS Power Points followed by the relevant slides. While the necessary derivations of some
complex theories of design and analysis is still done manually i.e with marker writings on the
white board and it seems that such lecturers systems may experience that it is much of an annoy to
incorporate technology into concerned lectures [8]. It is true and proven that derivations and
analyses of such theories are only written and explained once in a traditional classroom. By the
way if students were to let pass that scheduled class somehow, they have to either stature out the
derivations on their own or just be left incompetent of attempting such derivations or analyses.
That is why the learning in such case is teacher-centered i.e traditional and the students have to
focus very much on their course works that should be done alone with little to no group efforts.
Hence to get a free comparison between online and traditional learning system preferences student
are taken from 6 different departments namely Computer science and IT, Pharmacy, Business
opinionnaire listing 20 different perceptions were distributed among the students and after
completing all the related opinions, the enrolled students of the university were agreed with
traditional learning systems. The present research has been conducted by the Department of
Technology of Sarhad University of Science and Information technology Peshawar Pakistan, for
reviewing the perceptions of students of different department regarding traditional and online
learning preferences.
Perspective of the Researcher
The researchers were curious and concern about the students thought and views towards
traditional and online learning of the students in Laureano Salusod National High School, the fact
that it is so essential to the students. The researchers want to assess the student’s effectiveness of
traditional and online learning towards student skill development in the said school, and these their

Definition of Terms
Online learning- is education that takes place over the internet. it is often referred to
as “e-learning “among other term. However, online learning is just type of “distance learning” the
umbrella term of any learning that takes place across distance and not in a traditional classroom.
Frequency of use- The number of times or hour often the online games are used by the
respondents in playing.
Technology, communication and ICT applications have presented our generation with numerous
opportunities. Technology has touched each & and every field in some way or the other. Education
through e-learning applications has have opened up horizons of learning from distance, efficient
methods of learning and added quality to knowledge sharing activities. There has been a
significant amount of research by scholars, academicians and technology experts with technology
at its prime focus but the effectiveness of e-learning in extensively shaping the future of students
and adding quality to their thinking and values has not been discussed much. This study therefore
reviews the literature that is available on online and offline sources in the form of books, scholarly
articles and research writings from peer reviewed journals. The aim of the literature review is to
understand the scholarly works on the topic of e-learning both from the technological point of
view and for its impact on the students. The research highlights the gaps in the existing literature
and marks the areas that the future studies should cover to bridge the existing gaps in the literature
dissatisfaction of some of the e-learning students. The research surveys 424 university students for
their feedback on effectiveness of e-learning for them. The findings of the report suggest that the
intention and study focus are the main factors that influence the objectives and usefulness of e-
learning. Personal efficiency for the coursework is also a determining factor for the outcomes
(Shu-Sheng Liaw, 2008). The examination of effectiveness of e-learning is useful for not just the
students but also for the trainers as it helps them in refining their methods of teaching. Regular
testing of the outcomes of e-learning and efficiency of knowledge transfer guide the teachers to
employ techniques that can be more effective in transferring the education. The technocrats are
also interested in transforming the e-learning experiencing through effect ICT applications
(CommLab, 2015).
E-learning has been used extensively not just for academic purposes for students but also for
businesses and corporate employees to impart training on various upcoming industrial revisions
(Judith B. Strother, 2002). E-learning has contributed to so many different fields such as
A research study on pharmacy education by M. Sandra highlights that there is little to no evidence
for the fact that e-learning in pharmacy has significantly enhanced the knowledge of the
practitioners for the long term. The assessment finds that the e-learning is beneficial but at an
individual level and has limitations for value addition with quality and sustainability (Sandra M.
Salter et al., 2014). The study however fails to provide any records to prove that limitations with
evidence in the form of survey or case study. For health systems also, e-learning has been used
explicitly to serve the purpose of both teachers and learners. A study by Kai Ruggeri and others
stress on the various forms in which e-learning has benefited in tele-health facilities and learning
in the remote places. Digital literacy rate upliftment and need for infrastructure for e-learning has
been cited as effective measures to fulfil the objectives of e-learning comprehensively. However,
the study does not use any quantitative assessment or analytical tools for proving the findings of
A study conducted in Tehran Alzahra University by R. Safiyeh tried to investigate the relation
between the e-learning and motivation for the students. The study uses questionnaire based survey
and the university students as respondents, quantitative methods like person correlation was used
to understand the survey findings and form a relationship between the dependent and independent
variables for the research. The findings suggest that motivation of the students is affected by e-
learning significantly. But the study has many limitations as it is based on a single university and
uses no interviews; hence, the findings are not supported by corroborative evidence of face to face
the various aspects that make e-learning as an effective tool for transferring knowledge. According
to the report one of the factors that make e-learning suitable in the changing environment due to
dynamic nature of the technological upgrades, especially in the developing world, is the low cost
and ease of course adjustment for upgrading the courses quickly. The researches stress that e-
learning opportunities are a gateway of growth and prosperity for the developing world. The study
lacks the point of view of the students and misses the key point of including the quality of the
education provided in a compromise for low cost (Sekiwu Denis & Naluwemba Frances, 2014).
English as an international language is used officially for international trade, businesses, learning
conversant with English in order to smoothly learn and do business with their counter parts in
other countries. A study based in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by Intakhab A. Khan addresses the
usefulness of e-learning in English education for Saudi students. It says that the involvement of the
learners is an important aspect and e-learning through its innovative methods helps students relate
to the techniques with ease. Resource generation, usefulness and effectiveness for students were
some of the factors that were highlighted by the study as a mark of success of e-learning in English
language for students in Saudi Arabia. The study has limitations of using only a specific country
reviews from the students. The research work takes into account the view of drop out students and
compares them to the successful student. There is found to be a striking difference in their views
as drop out find the e-learning as ineffective and useless. The study therefore establishes the fact
that the intention, performance and individual approach make e-learning practices suitable for the
students. However, the study does not comment on what additional factors are involved for
students to drop out from the e-learning courses (Yair Levy, 2007).
Other than these, interactive videos are a major contributing factor that helps the students in
analysis the subjects and evolve a deeper understanding of the study material. The 3D technology,
various software and multi dimensional approach have convincingly made e-learning equivalent to
A research based on data mining for trends in e-learning establishes the fact that the researches on
e-learning are moving their focus from effectiveness of the e-learning to the methods of teaching.
Medical education and training has been identifies as the aggressive users of e-learning and
present a wide scope for induction of such practice in future. The study remarks that the scope,
expectations and applicability for developing and developed courtesies differ significantly
(Miklian, 2018). The government policies have major role to play in growing the effectiveness of
the e-learning for the students and businesses. However, the limitations of the studies include lack
of empirical data to support the views expressed and corroborate the findings (Jui-long Hung,
2010).
