History: The Pz Kolw I Aus! D and E were developed to give the
cavalry 9 hight tank for pursuit ang reconnaissance, with a top speed
fof S8ki/hr instead of the normal speed of 40k
Specific features: The entire hull, superstructure and suspension
were of a dillarent design trom the normal Pz Kptw {I series, but the
furret remained the same. The superstructur@ Wont was in one
straight plece and hed two dovbleshullered visors, one on the lett
for the driver and one on tha right for the radio operator This was
the fret Pa kph to use a lorsion-dar Suspension and a pre-selactive
‘gearbox. Instead of the fhe singletyred road wheels and four return
fellars of the normal Pz Kpfw Il series, the Aus! D and E had four
large doublesyred road wheels which also served to roturn the
wack, The latler was also redesigned. with centre guides replacing
the double horn guides. The dry pin track of the Aust D was replaced
by bricated pin track whicn necessitated the use of -nawly:
esignad drive sprockets, idlars and toad whee's
Combat service: The Pz Kl Il Ausf D and € were {0 be iesled to the
tank detachments of the leichter (light) Divisionen. Only sufficient to
equip a single Panzerabteilung wore. completed, and it 's uncertain i
these saw action, even in Poland. In March 1940, they were withdrawn
for conversion to Pz Kofw Il Flamm ({lame-throwers)
