(15 Points) (8pts) : National Geographic Documentary)

1) The document is a passage in English about NASA's Curiosity rover mission to Mars. It discusses how the rover has sent back images of strange rock formations that some people claim resemble familiar objects, but are actually just examples of the psychological phenomenon known as "pareidolia". 2) The passage explains that pareidolia is when the brain interprets random visual stimuli as familiar objects, like seeing animal shapes in clouds. It offers insight into Mars' geological features which are delicately formed due to the planet's calm environment. 3) Scientists say that claims of seeing things like spoons or people's faces in the Martian rocks are just examples of pareidolia, as Mars lacks any civilization

PART ONE : Reading ( 15 points )
A/ Comprehension ( 8pts )
Read the text carefully then do the activities .
Space pareidolia
One of NASA's most ambitious missions to date is the Mars Science Laboratory mission . It
is a robotic spacecraft that will explore the surface of Mars . The rover, named Curiosity, landed on
the Red Planet on Aug. 5, 2012. It will act as a mobile science laboratory on Mars to investigate
whether life could exist on the Red Planet and even help scientists and engineers plan for future
human missions to Mars.
While it will not be the first rover ever sent to Mars, curiosity will certainly be the most
advanced. The rover is equipped with 17 cameras, a handful of instruments and an innovative landing
system. The images sent back from Mars often contain strange rock formation , in these rocks, the
world has spotted everything from pyramids, coffins, iguanas and even Obama’s head . One group
claims they have seen a ‘floating spoon’ on Mars captured by Curiosity’s Mastcam . It really looks like
a spoon handing in the air just above the surface of some layered rock . But as Mars is devoid of any
civilization that is capable of manufacturing said “spoon”, there’s probably a more logical answer.
The logical answer, however, Scientists say “Pareidolia”. It is a psychological phenomenon that
makes our brains interpret some kind of random visual stimulus as a familiar object such as animal
shapes in patterns, textures. It does, however, offer an insight to the strangely calm Martian
environment, which can create delicate geological features.
