Experiment 8: Ultraviolet Examination: I. Objectives
Experiment 8: Ultraviolet Examination: I. Objectives
III. Procedure:
Part 1.
1. Using money bills, placed the documents under examination under Ultraviolet
Lamp.
2. Record your observation on the table provided below.
3. Repeat the procedure for other samples.
Part 2.
1. Get three money bills with different dominations and have it photocopy.
2. Get a piece of bond paper where the money bills are to be placed for dusting.
3. Dust each of the money bills with ultraviolet powder.
4. See to it that both sides of the money bills are covered with the UV powder.
5. Placed the dusted money bills on envelope.
6. Hand-over the envelope to the subject who will be examined for ultraviolet
powder.
7. Allow him to open the envelope and to count the money bills which were taken
out from the envelope.
8. Direct the subject to have his hands, the money bills as well as his clothing be
subjected to ultraviolet examination inside the dark room.
9. On the photocopy shade the areas covered with UV powder.
10. Draw the dorsal and palmar hands of the subject and mark the areas with X to
indicate the position of the UV powder.
1. Money bills: Glowing of Pearl shaped and triangular shaped located on the
PHP 1,000 lower left part of the bill.
2. PHP 500 A bird (parrot) glows at the back of the 500 peso bill.
3. PHP 100 The fish glows at the back lower left part of the 100 peso bill.
4. 50 Some rays of the sun glows and the fish on the lower left part of
the back side of the bill.
6. Counterfeit The pearl glows but doesn’t have a triangular shaped like the
1,000 peso bill original 1,000 peso bill.
7. School ID The ID glows because of the reflection of the light and and the
logo of the school is located at the top right side of the ID.
9. LTO An eagle glows at the front part while a line glows at the back of
the ID.
10. NBI The logo glows in the middle of the paper, while in the back it
looks like an ordinary paper.
11. PSA Document PSA logo glows on the center of the front part and colorful dots
can be seen all over the paper. on the back part, many spots
glows all over the paper.
Part 2.
Hands of the tested person (Dorsal)
UNWASHED WASHED
Result: The unwashed hand is full of UV powder, while the hand on the right side is
washed with soap and water. But even it is washed with soap and water, you can see the
excess powder in the hand but not clear as the unwashed hand.
Part 2.
Hands of the tested person (Palmar)
UNWASHED WASHED
Result: On the left photo, the palmar hand covered with UV powder is glowing clearly,
but on the right photo, the palmar hand is washed with soap and water. If you see it, they
are not the same because the right photo is washed.
Questions:
1. Describe briefly the forensic application of ultraviolet dusting and examination.
UV examination has a big contribution in solving cases. UV examination can also use to
identify falsified document, like school ID, Driver’s License, PRC, NBI, PSA, etc. Also it can
identify the fake and original money bills.
2. What happens when the subject counts the dusted money bills given to him?
When the subject counts the dusted money bills, the powder might be transferred to
his/her hand and maybe used in examination right after.
4. What happened when the suspect who touches the dusted bills washed his hands with
water or alcohol?
In our first experiment, you’ll see that even if you washed your hands with soap and water,
there is still a UV powder that glows when directed to UV light/lamp. So, evidences might still
occur.
V. Conclusion:
I therefore conclude that UV examination is the examination for the presence of ultraviolet
fluorescent powder with the aid of UV lamp and can be use in entrapment cases. through YV
powder and UV lamp, we can determine if the documents and bills are fake or original.
