Lecture 10 (Chap#3-Standard, Models and Languages 1)

The document discusses several network management standards and models. It provides an overview of the OSI network management architectural model, which includes four models: organization model, information model, communication model, and functional model. The OSI model addresses all aspects of network management and helps provide a complete picture of network management. The organization model defines objects, agents and managers. The information model structures management information in the MIB. The communication model manages application processes and layer interactions. The functional model covers configuration, fault, performance, security and accounting functions.

OVERVIEW
› Global Prospective
› Two Leading Models

3
ISO Generalized Model
› It address all aspects of network management
› Three models were discussed
– Organization, Information and Communication that manages
Networks, Systems and Services
› 4th model (Functional model)
– Fault, Configuration, Performance, Security and Accounting
› ASN.1 formal language and data structure
– For storage and communication of management information

4
Global Prospective
› Three areas of network needs managing
– Inter-layer Protocols
– Intra-layer Protocols
– Network, Systems and Services
› Our focus will be on
– Network Management: Management of network comprising of
Nodes and Links
– System Management: Managing system resource such as CPU,
Disk Usage and Application process.
– Service Management: Services provided to customers by the
organization.
5
Two Leading Models (Internet & OSI)
› Internet Model
– Simple scalar model
– Easy to implement
› OSI Model
– Object oriented
– Complex
– Harder to implement
› But OSI is used
– Mature state of object oriented technology
– Convergence of data communication and telecommunication
technologies.
– Addresses services and businesses aspects 6
NETWORK › OSI/CMIP
MANAGEMENT › Internet/SNMP
STANDARDS
Four basic standards and
› TMN
5th emerging technologies
› IEEE LAN/MAN
› Emerging Technologies

7
OSI/CMIP Standard
› Adopted by ISO
› CMIP: Common Management Information Protocol
– It has CMIS (Common Management Information Service)
– CMIS is most comprehensive set of specifications and address all
seven layers of OSI model.
– Its specifications are object oriented, hence manage objects, class
and inheritance rules.
– It also address network management application.
– Extensively used in internet.
– Drawbacks:
› Complex and stack is large
8
SNMP/Internet Standard
› Adopted by IETF
› Started as Industrial Standard and become a standard
specification for standard organization
› SNMP: Simple Network Management Protocol
– Primarily intended for management of internet components
– Currently adopted for WAN and telecommunication systems
– Easy to Implement and most widely used

9
TMN Standard
› Adopted by ITU-T
› Designed for management of telecom networks
› Based on OSI network management framework
› It extends the concept of management beyond the
managing networks and network components
› Address both network and administrative aspects of
management
› eTOM industry standard for business processes for the
implementing TMN using NGOSS framework.
› TNM is the bottom-up as eTOM is top-down approach 10
IEEE Standard
› Adopted Internationally
› Concerned with OSI layer I & II
› Both OSI/CMIP & SNMP/Internet use IEEE standard for lower
layer
› IEEE 802.1 defines overview, architecture and management
› IEEE 802.2 defines (LLC) provides transparency for various
physical media and protocols to the network layer
› IEEE 802.3 defines for Ethernet LANs.

11
Emerging Technologies (1)
› Web Technology (Web-based management)
– Uses Web-Sever and Web-Browser architecture
– Influence by object-oriented, hypermedia server, CORBA-oriented
and Client-Server architectures.
› WBEM (Web-Based Enterprise Management)
– Developed by DMTF (Desktop Management Task Force)
– Based on CIM data model using CIM Operation over HTTP
› JMX (Java Management Extension)
– Open Java technology
– developed under Sun Microsystem’s JMAPI (Java Management API)
initiative.
– It defines management architectures, application programming
interfaces (APIs) and management services.
12
Emerging Technologies (2)
› XML (Meta-Markup Language)
– Standardized by Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C) for document
exchange in Web.
– Defines methods to exchange data in the form of XML document
– Also define XML-document processing standard method for data
processing
› CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture)
– Object-oriented client-server model
– Object define using IDL (Interface Description Language) using
distributed managed object architecture.
› Web-based management system
– It uses object-oriented approach and also removes the dedicated
workstation constraint, by the use of Web browser.

MODEL
› Information Model
› Communication Model
› Functional Model

14
OSI Network Management Architectural Model
› ISO standard and most complete of all models
› It address all aspects of network management
› It’s parts are applicable to other models
› It helps to understand the complete picture of network
management
› It comprises of four models

15
OSI Architecture Classification (1)
› Organization Model
– Components of network management system, functions &
infrastructure
– It defines term object, agent and manager
– Defined in ISO 10040 System Management Overview
› Information Model
– Deals with structure and organization of management information
– Define ISO 10165 define Structure of Management Information (SMI),
Information database, Management Information Base (MIB)
– MIB deals with relationship and storage of management information
– SMI defines how management information is structured
16
OSI Architecture Classification (2)
› Communication Model
– Three basic functions
– Management of application processes (Application Layer)
– Layer management between layers
– Layers Operations
› Functional Model
– It deals with the user oriented requirements of network management
– 5 functional application areas are (system management function)
› Configuration , Fault, Performance, Security, Accounting
