ABSTRACT

The research is entitled “Effects of Listening to Music on the Academic

Performance of Senior High school Students in Arellano University Jose Rizal

Campus.” Music is an art form that we utilized every day. There are various

activities that are related to music. It is even extensive in areas such as

education. As stated by Michel Cabanac (2013), listening to pleasant music while

performing an academic test helped students to overcome stress in times of

examination. This is one of the positive effects that music brings to the students.

However music can also affect the students' academic performance negatively.

Future work should further discuss the relevant interconnection of music

involvement in educational performance. As stated in the research, Effect of

Music on the Academic Performance of College Students (2018), music and arts

have the potential to facilitate advancement in education contexts. The aim of the

study was to determine the effects of music on the academic performance of

Senior High school students at Arellano University - Jose Rizal Campus.

The researchers conducted surveys to the senior high school students of

Arellano University-Jose Rizal Campus. Descriptive method was used to treat the

data gathered. Based on the conclusions, out of the 50 respondents, majority of

them always listen to music while studying. Most respondents prefer pop in terms

of music genre compared to classical, metal rock, etc. This research shows that

music has positive effects on students while studying, even that some research

suggests that music is nothing but a distract

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Music is essential for our day by day lives. Indeed, even from birth to death we

utilized music. As indicated to Esquire Philippines (2019), "Filipino internet users

listen to an average of two hours and six minutes’ worth of music each day". It is

said to be the largest average by Digital in 2019. That is why we might like to

know its effects on the academic performance of a student. As stated by Michel

Cabanac (2013), listening to pleasant music while performing an academic test

helped students to overcome stress. This means that music may help a student

to relieve stress in times of examination. On the other hand, according to the

study of Kongbang, et al.(2019), listening to lyrical music while studying creates a

huge distraction. The study mentioned suggests that music is nothing but a

distraction while studying. This shows that music has both positive and negative

effects on students while studying.

As announced by CNN in 2019, some exploration recommended that music

can increment forceful musings or energize wrongdoing. The impacts of music

are distinctive from various perspectives. It very well may be an inspiration and

motivation to other people. While music can be additionally an interruption and

incitement to a few. As per the article from Music Ally (2019), 82% of adolescents

said they tune in to music consistently and most understudies fall into this age.

Notwithstanding, the issue is on the off chance that music has more negative

than beneficial outcomes, at that point, it can't be utilized for instructive purposes.
The aim of this research is to know the effects of listening to music on the

academic performance of senior high school students at Arellano University -

Jose Rizal Campus. Based on the research Effect of Music on the Academic

Performance of College Students (2018), music, and arts have the potential to

facilitate advancement in education contexts. The findings we have gathered can

serve as an addition to materials that can be used by people to use music that

may help with education. Also, this study may help the researchers to know if

students are listening to music while doing school activities and what are they

feeling while doing so. The research can serve as an assurance that music has

definitely effects on the academic performance of a senior high school student.

Statement of the Problem

The researchers aim to know if listening to music can be used as a

tool in enhancing a student's learning skills for the purpose of improving their

academic performance. Specifically, the researcher seeks to answer the

following questions:

1. Demographic Profile of the Respondents, in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

1.3 Grade Level

1.4 Strand

2. How frequently do the respondents listen to music while studying?

3. What music genre do you like?

4. What are the effects of music on the academic performance, in terms of:

4.1 Positive Effects

4. 2 Negative Effects

5. How may the results of this research be utilized music in contributing to the

academic performance?
Significance of the Study

This research conducted to benefit the following:

 STUDENTS. The direct recipients of the output of this research are students.

It will contribute and inform them about the topic. The findings of this

research could help the students to utilize music that will be beneficial for

them.

 EDUCATORS. Teachers may benefit from the information obtained in this

study and gain a better perspective on music’s impact on student

academics. It may help them devise strategies that involve music in helping

the students in their studies.

 MUSICIANS. Through this research, musicians will have the knowledge on

what kind of music or sound to make that may help the students in their

academic performance.

 COMMUNITY. With the help of this research, the people in the community

will gain awareness that music may be used as an alternative technique for

creating and developing good learning ambiance.

 FUTURE RESEARCHERS. This research will be useful and may serve as

reference for the researchers who have the plan to make any related study.

It may serve as their guidance to gather more information.

Scope and Delimitations

This research was focused on both positive and negative effects of listening to

music on the academic performance of the senior high school students at

Arellano University – Jose Rizal Campus. The study will be delimited to exactly

fifty (50) respondents with 25 students from Grade 11 and Grade 12. These

respondents will be selected using the purposive sampling technique out of the

list of Grade 11 and 12 students of Arellano University enrolled during the

academic year of 2020-2021.

Definition of Terms

Elicit - evoke or draw out a response, answer, or fact.

Incitement - the action of provoking unlawful behavior or urging someone to

behave unlawfully.

Increment - the action or process of increasing especially in quantity or value

Lyrical - beautifully expressed in words, poetry, or music.

Musings - a period of reflection or thought.

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The researchers used the descriptive method. Descriptive research aims to

accurately and systematically describe a population, situation, or phenomenon

(Shona McCombes, 2019). It also said to be a research design that can answer

what, when, where, and how questions.

Research Instrument

Researchers used the survey questionnaire through Google forms as the data

collection tool for this study. The questionnaire is composed of five questions and

every question has different choices. The questions aim to elicit relevant

information's regarding the effects of listening to music while studying

Treatment of Data

To analyze the accumulated information, the researchers have the

accompanying statistical methods:

1. Percentage:

Where:

% = percentage of distribution

F = total number of responses

N = total number of respondents

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents the data collected from the respondents through the

questionnaire in Google forms distributed by the researchers. The data were

interpreted in tabular form and were given in-depth analysis

CONCLUSIONS

In accordance with the significant findings of this study, the following

conclusions were drawn:

1. The majority of respondents are 17 years old and from the Humanities and

Social Sciences (HUMSS) strand. There are equal numbers of male and female

respondents, as well as equal numbers of students in grades 11 and 12.

2. The majority of respondents always listen to music while studying.

3. Pop is the most popular music genre among the respondents.

4. The positive effect of listening to music while studying is that it improves the

respondents' mood while they are performing academic tasks. On the other

hand, the negative effect of listening to music while studying is that the

respondents are unable to comprehend some or large amount of information

when music is playing in the background.

5. Playing songs that suits your tastes is a good way to avoid the negative effects

of music to the academic performance to utilize it as a tool for learning purposes.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The following recommendations are hereby presented:

1. Students - should consider listening to music while studying which has

been shown to improve their intellectual proficiency and mood, and this in

turn helps them improve their academic performance. However, it is

recommended that they listen to music of their choice or music that suits

their tastes to help them resist and avoid the negative effects of it on their

academic performance.

2. Musicians could gain knowledge about what genre or style to make, that

may motivate students for the purpose of improving their academic

performance

3. Parents - should support their children with their music preferences while

ensuring to establish limitations and providing them with other activities to

do.

4. Educators - may advocate listening to music while studying because of

the positive effects this could bring to the students. They may also

consider doing activities in relation or with the help of music while they are

teaching.

5. Future Researchers - should conduct a substantial and thorough

investigation to gain more information about the effects of music on the

students. They could also focus on the current problems of the students

that needs to be addressed.
