Engineering Mechanics Friction Class Assignment 27 April 2021

1. This document contains 7 engineering mechanics problems related to friction. The problems involve determining forces, coefficients of friction, and whether blocks are in equilibrium on inclined planes. 2. The first problem involves calculating the ratio of a pulling force to the weight of a stone block on a horizontal plane. Other problems determine minimum forces required to move blocks, whether blocks are in equilibrium, and the maximum forces that can be applied before slipping occurs. 3. Friction coefficients, block weights, plane inclinations, and applied forces are given, with the goal of calculating unknown values related to static and kinetic friction.

Friction Class assignment

1. A block of stone resting on a horizontal plane can be just moved by a pulling force inclined
upward at 30˚ to the horizontal. If µ = 0.5, find the ratio of pulling force to the weight of the
stone block.
2. A body of 20 kN rests on a horizontal plane. Just to move the body along the plane, the
minimum force required is 7.28 kN. Determine the least inclined force required to just draw the
body along the same horizontal plane
3. A 100 N force acts as shown on a 300 N block placed on an inclined plane. The coefficients of
friction between the block and plane are µs =0.25 and µk = 0.20. Determine whether the block is
in equilibrium and find the value of the friction force.

4. Determine the range of values which the mass m 2 may have so that the m1= 100 kg block will
neither start moving up the plane nor slip down the plane. The coefficient of friction for the
contact surfaces is 0.3, angle of inclination is 20˚.

5. Determine the magnitude and direction of the friction force acting on the 100 kg block shown if,
first P = 500 N and second P = 100 N. The coefficient of static friction is 0.2 and the coefficient of
kinetic friction is 0.12. The forces are applied with the block initially at rest.
6. A block weighing 500 N just starts moving down a rough inclined plane when supported by a
force 200 N acting parallel to the plane in upward direction. The same block is on the verge of
moving up the plane when pulled by a force of 300N acting parallel to the plane. Find the
inclination of the plane and coefficient of friction between the inclined plane and the block.
7. The three flat blocks are positioned on the 30˚ inclined as shown, and a force P parallel to the
incline is applied to the middle block. The upper block is prevented from moving by a wire which
attached it to the fixed support. The coefficient f static friction for each of the three pairs of
mating surfaces is shown. Determine the maximum value which P may have before any slipping
takes place.
