Final Exam Numerical Analysis and Modelling Even Semester 2020 2021

1. The document provides details of a final exam for a Numerical Analysis and Modelling course, including 6 questions covering topics like linear regression, interpolation, numerical integration, solving nonlinear equations, and numerical simulation. 2. Students are asked to choose 3 out of the 6 questions, which involve using techniques like polynomial interpolation, trapezoidal integration rules, Euler's method, Heun's method, and Runge-Kutta method to solve problems related to bacterial growth modeling, integral approximation, solving differential equations, and modeling heat transfer. 3. The last question asks students to discuss the role of numerical simulation and methods in advancing science, engineering, and technology, specifically in materials and metallurgical engineering.

Please do 3 out of 6 questions available below!

1. The data below represents the bacterial growth in a liquid culture over a number of days.

Day 0 4 8 12 16 20
Amount x 106 67 84 98 125 149 185

a. Find a best-fit equation to the data trend. Try several possibilities linear and
exponential. Use the software package of your choice to find the best equation to
predict the amount of bacteria after 40 days.
b. Estimate amount of bacteria for 10 days using polynomial interpolation order 3!
2. Use the Single Trapezoidal rule, Composite Trapezoidal rule (n=4), Simpson 1/3 rule,
Simpson 3/8 rule and Gauss Quadrature (2 point) to approximate the following integrals.
𝟏𝟎
∫𝟐 3x5 - 40x4 + 20x3 + 21x2 - 5x + 8
3. Use the Modified Euler (Mid Point) without iteration and Heun Method’s to approximate
the solutions to the following initial-value problems, and calculate the true error by
compare the results to the actual values if known y(0) = 0
𝟏 𝟏 3t 𝟏 -2t
y’ = te3t-2y, 0 ≤ t ≤ 2, with h=0.5, and actual solution y(t) = te3t - e + e
𝟓 𝟐𝟓 𝟐𝟓
4. Solve y ' = y + t , y ( 0 ) = y0 = 1 and find y (1) using t = 0.25sec with:
a. Euler method.
b. Heun’s method
c. Runge-Kutta method
Show steps of each method in your answer clearly and compute error obtained by each method by
comparing their solutions with the exact solution y ( t ) = 2et − t − 1 .

5. The rate of cooling of a body can be expressed as: = −k (T − Ta ) , where T = temperature of
dt
the body (°C), Ta = temperature of the ambient/surrounding medium (°C), and k = the
proportionality constant (/min). If a metal ball initially at 90°C is dropped into water that is held at
a constant value of Ta = 20°C, use Euler and Runge-Kutta methods to compute how long it takes
the ball to cool to 40°C if k = 0.25 /min. Choose proper medium time step (not too larger nor to
small step). Comment the obtained results from both techniques.
6. What is the main role of numerical simulation and numerical methods in advancement of science,
engineering and technologies? Support your arguments with some concrete examples in the field
of materials and metallurgical engineering!
