Chapter 1

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1.Antecedents

Artesian (K) Ltd was commissioned to curry out geotechnical investigation into the subsoil
conditions for proposed construction of 3Nos 24 tower buildings in Kirichwa road, Kilimani area
in Nairobi and to undertake and interpret laboratory results and prepare a geotechnical report
on the findings and give its recommendations. Artesian (K) Ltd did the site investigation works
and commissioned Vabela Geoconsult and services to conduct the laboratory test and prepare
this report.

1.2.Purpose and Scope of Work

The main objective of this factual report is to define the stratigraphic characteristics of the site
based on the field work and observations; and later use this information together with
laboratory results to recommend the most appropriate foundation system for the proposed
construction works, from the geotechnical point of view.

In order to comply with the above mentioned objective, the following activities were carried
out under the following scope of work during field and laboratory investigations:

 Identification of soil and rock stratigraphy for the upper layers of the soil profile.
 Curry out SPT tests at designated depths
 Identification of problem soils through laboratory tests
 Presence of perched or shallow water table conditions.
 Geological site inspection.
 Evaluation of material properties for foundations and evaluation of the inherent
geotechnical risk on the property.
 Execution of laboratory tests.
 General Geotechnical recommendations for the project.

1.3.Project Location

The site is located along Kirichwa road in Kilimani area, Nairobi County.

1.4.Project Characteristics

The project consists of a proposed 3 Nos. twenty four tower storey building with/or without
basements and associated amenities.

2. FIELD WORK
2.1 General

The locations of the test positions were determined by the client. The field study consisted of
nine Boreholes explored to a depth of 20.0m using a GY150 drilling rig. SPT tests were done on
overburden leyers as directed by the client to depth where rock was encountered. Detailed logs
as shown in Annex I, borehole logs.

During the course of field works, Disturbed bag samples were obtained with the aim of carrying
out corresponding laboratory tests.

2.2 Site works

Site works was undertaken on 15th July 2017 to 24th July 2017. During this period, Drilling and
their associated tests such as SPT and sampling were carried out in accordance to BS 5930.

2.2.1 Standard Penetration Tests

The Standard Penetration Test (SPT) was carried out using the standard equipment as described
below, according to the ASTM 1586D standards.

Test procedure
Standard Penetration Test (SPT) involves driving a standard thick-walled sample tube into the
ground at the bottom of a borehole by blows from a slide hammer with standard weight and
falling distance. The sampler is driven by a drop hammer weighing 64 kg falling through a height
of 76 cm. The sample tube is driven 150 mm into the ground and then the number of blows
needed for the tube to penetrate each 75mm (3 in) up to a depth of 450 mm (18 in) is
recorded. The sum of the number of blows required for the second, third, fourth and fifth (6 in.)
of penetration is reported as SPT blow-count value, commonly termed as "standard penetration
resistance" or the "N-value".

The hammer weight, drop height, spoon diameter, rope diameter etc. are standard dimensions.
After the test, the sample remaining inside the split spoon is preserved in an airtight container
for inspection and description. The N-values provide an indication of the relative density of the
subsoil, and they are used in the empirical geotechnical correlations to estimate the
approximate shear strength properties of the soils in conjunction with other relevant tests as
illustrated in table 2. SPT N values are as given on logs in Annex II.

Table 2: Relative density and N correlations for clays.

No. of Field Undrained Shear

Blows Strength Strength Field Assessment
<2 Very soft <20kN/m2 Exudes between fingers when squeezed
2 - 4 Soft 20 to 40 kN/m2 Molded by light finger pressure
5 - 8 Firm 40 to 75 kN/m2 Molded by strong finger pressure
9 - 15 Stiff 75 to 150 kN/m2 Cannot be molded by fingers. Can be indented by thumb.
16 - 30 Very stiff >150 kN/m2 Can be indented by thumb nail.
>30 Hard > 300 kN/m2 Cannot be indented by thumb nail.

Standard penetration test (SPT) is one of the most commonly used methods for determining
allowable soil bearing capacity. This is simply because SPT blow count numbers are readily
available from soil boring. The equations that are commonly used are those proposed by
Meyerhof based on twenty five millimeter of foundation settlement.

2.2.2 Soil Sampling

Bag soil (disturbed) samples were sampled from the boreholes for the purpose of testing them
in the laboratory; Sampling was done in accordance to BS 5930.

2.2.3 Rock Coring

A total of nine boreholes were drilled over the site using one core drilling machine.

At each borehole site, a 150mm diameter continuous flight auger was used to advance the hole
in unconsolidated formations. Where rock was encountered, 76mm diameter diamond bit
attached to a double tube core barrel was used to drill the rock. Water flushing using a piston
pump was used during coring to flush out cuttings and to cool the bit.

All the core barrels were of 1.5m length and the rock cores recovered were placed in wooden
core boxes of 1.5m length. A description of the material encountered and depth are shown on
the borehole logs given as Annex I. The cores recovered from the boreholes are shown on the
photographs included as Annex I.

2.3 Ground Water Monitoring

No ground water was encountered during the excavation in the boreholes. Water was used to
flush the holes during core drilling. There was therefore water in the borehole as drilling
progressed.

3. GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE STATE OF SITE

3.1 Geographical Location

The site and the surrounding areas are located on relatively flat ground terrain with a gentle
slope towards Nairobi town.

Geotechnical Report 2018
3.2 Physiography

The area falls under the geological of Nairobi which has been dominated by volcanic activity,
The rocks in the Nairobi area mainly comprise a succession of lavas and Pyroclastics of the
Cainozoic age and overlying the foundation of folded Precambrian schist’s and gneisses of the
Mozambique belt with the project area located predominantly phonolitic trachyte overlaid by
shallow layers of Tuffs.

3.3 Climate

The site and the surrounding region are in Nairobi County and can be described as relatively
warm; temperatures are fairly uniform with coolest months occurring from June to August
while hottest temperatures typically occur from December to March. Rainfall is bimodal with
long rains occurring from March to June while the short rainy period occurs from October to
December. The mean annual rainfall ranges between 800 mm and 1,300 mm per annum.

3.4 Vegetation

The site is open dominated by grass.

3.5 Permeability and Drainage

The site area is characterized with fair good drainage which is greatly facilitated by the site
slight sloppy topography with fairly good ground water infiltration due to presence of silty
sands around the site and highly fractured rock below.

3.6 Regional Geology

The site and the surrounding areas comprises of Nairobi volcanic rocks, which comprise of the
Nairobi Trachytes extending from Dagoretti – Karen up to the east of Nairobi, and towards
north of Kiambu and Githunguri; Nairobi Phonolites between the Nairobi National Park and
Kiambu and resting directly on the Athi Series; and the Kapiti Phonolites which are also overlain
by the Athi Series. The Upper Athi Series formations mainly consist of sandy sediments, gravel,
or pebble beds, tuffs and pyroclastic sediments. Towards Kiambu area soils are products of
weathering of mainly volcanic rocks and are either shallow, yellow-brown to yellow-red friable
clays overlying a laterite horizon or deep red soils that reach more than 50 feet (15m) in
thickness, while in and around Nairobi, black cotton soils with calcareous and non-calcareous
variants are dominant.

3.7 Local Geology

The study area mainly consists of agglomeratic Tuffs ranging from cemented fine-grained, wind-
sorted pumiceous ash to agglomeratic tuffs with rock fragments up to 0.5 m size. This overlay
phonolitic trachyte which are vesicular and occasionally porphyritic, tubular and inter bedded with
sands all at varied weathering stages. Most of the rocks on these layers are still undergoing
weathering processes mostly chemical weathering through hydrolysis and oxidation action.

Low <30 20 - 35
Medium 30 - 40 35 - 50
High 40 - 60 50 - 70
Very High >60 70 - 90

Most of the materials on site are sands of none expansive behavior, however there are minor
instances that may cause some areas to heave when exposed to water, such area are as
recorded in BH 9 at depth of 4.0-8.0m which recorded a low liquid limits of 52.0 % which
classifies as of medium to high expansiveness.

4.1.5 Mechanical Test - Compaction Test

Compaction test (Standard Proctor test) was done determine the relationship between the
moisture content and the dry density of a soil for a specified compaction effort. The samples
were carefully and thoroughly mixed, quartered and tested in compaction in accordance to BS
1377. This test was carried out on borehole BH 5, BH 8 AND BH 9 at depth of 4.0 -14.0m.

The test identifies the soil as of low to medium density recording maximum dry density as
summarized in table 5 below. Test results are given in the annex II.

4.1.7 Un-axial Compression Tests on Rock Cores

Un-axial Compression Test on core samples were done from cores selected from various depths
in accordance with BS1881. Each piece of core was cut with a diamond saw to produce a right
cylinder. The ends were ground flat in accordance with the standard. All the specimens were
tested without soaking.

The test requires the specimens to have a height to diameter ratio of approximately 2:1; this
means that the longer lengths of solid core tended to be selected for testing. This will have
resulted in an overestimate of the strength of the layer. The results of the tests are given in the
Table 6 below and the details in the Annex II.

The following stratums were tested for UCS and recorded the following strengths:-

5.2 General Site Stratography

The site stratigraphy is quite homogeneous and it can be summarized as follows:

From 0.00 to 10.00m: Top layer composed of dense black silty clay.

From 10.00 to 20.0m: Grey aggromeritic Tuff rocks with variable stages of weathering. The
weathering grades ranging from grade II to grade VI (Slightly to highly weathered). This layer is
characterized of course grained, compact and medium dense, level of hardness depending on
the level of weathering at the present time.

6. SITE EVALUATION

The site is situated on a flat ground characterized by two minor soil profiles based on rock
formation as found on site from the explored boreholes:

The profile consists of silty sand layers overlaying to a depth of approximately 10.0m thick of
over burden, this then overlay a varied weathered Agglomerati tuff rocks.

The weathering stages on this site vary from slightly to highly weathering conditions. The rock
from the exploration work indicates the site to be uniform in terms of rock composition,
weathering conditions and shear strength.
Geotechnical Report 2018
6.1 Problem Soils and Grounds

No evidence of problematic soils was found on site but the silty sand encountered can be
expected to collapse during excavation. For this reason it is essential that the excavations for
the foundations are properly supported by such methods as strutting or grouting. It is also
recommended that the excavations are not left open for long time after excavation.

No evidence of low density or major leached horizons was encountered to indicate a collapsible
grain structure. However, Areas with extremely weathered rock or residual sands encountered
at or below foundation level should be removed and replaced with mass concrete or backfilled
with suitable materials.

6.2 Shallow Ground Water

No groundwater or perched water table was encountered during the drilling exercise.
However, water maybe observed during foundation excavation exercise due to shallow water
seepage from higher grounds through the faults due to releases in pore pressure.

The regional water table is expected to deeper than the explored depth but may rise during
heavy rains.

6.3 Potential to Flooding

No flooding is expected as no natural or artificial systems impact on the site.

6.4 Excavatability and Installations Services

Excavatability across the site will be easy to moderate and can be excavated using heavy
earthmoving equipments. However due to differential in weathering may necessitate the use of
pneumatic rock breakers at depth lower than 15m.

6.5 Slope Stability and Erosions

The proposed development area has a natural ground slope of <1°.

Manor instability of shallow vertical trenches or walls of up to 3.0meters is expected at the

current moisture conditions due to density inconsistencies as a result of weathering, fractures
and level disturbances caused during excavation.

Moderate to severe instability of deep vertical trenches or excavations greater than 3.0 meters
is expected on areas with silty sand and extremely weathered rocks. The necessary stabilization
techniques and/or precautionary measures need to be implemented in all excavations that are
to be accessed during the construction process.

Geotechnical Report 2018
6.6 Foundation Solutions

Based on the soil profiling and laboratory testing, combined pad footing (improved pads) or raft
foundations are recommended for lighter building while deep or pile foundation are
recommended to high heavier buildings. The foundation improving material or foundation bed
is to be compacted to 95% MOD AASHTO density of optimum moisture content.

The residual and completely decomposed rock encountered at or below foundation levels is to
be removed and replaced with concrete or approved material compacted to 95% MOD AASHTO
density of optimum moisture content. A cast in-situ pads or spread foot foundations founded at
/or below a depth of 6.0m below the surface is recommended.

7. GEOTECHNICAL RISK EVALUATION

Based on information collected and tests conducted on the site indicates the site suitable for
the intended development. Suitable approved methods shall be used to mitigate the risks
associated with sever collapse of excavation walls; the occurrences of sand layers below the
foundation level should be investigated after excavation to ensure that their occurrences don’t
compromise the foundations.

Seismicity activity in the area is insignificant.

8. FOUNDATION ANALYSIS
8.1 Foundation Evaluation

Considering the characteristics of the soil, the stratigraphic nature of the rock obtained from
the field and laboratory studies it is evident that there are existence of weak zones to extreme
depths of the boreholes; therefore, it’s recommended that considerations should be carefully
made should any foundation system are to be laid on this layers.

The top most layers up to a depth of 10.0m will have to be completely removed before
commencement of any construction works. In the case of employing any platforms, it’s
important to note that these will be constructed on a surface free from the above mentioned
top layer.

In terms of BS5930 the tuffs rock classifies as very weak to weak. The rocks are likely to require
pneumatic tools or heavy earthmoving equipment for removal and the foundations should be
taken down to the firm rock free from extremely weathered rocks.

Areas with weak extremely weathered rock encountered below or at foundation level should
be removed and replaced with mass concrete or the foundations need to be taken to a lower
depth to avoid them.

The weathering products of Nairobi volcanic rocks are generally highly expansive and when
exposed in an excavation in the presence of water can swell and soften. Should any such
materials be encountered in the excavations they need to be removed and replaced with mass
concrete or the foundations need to be taken to a lower depth to avoid them.

8.2 Shallow Foundation Analysis

The ultimate load bearing capacity analysis for shallow foundations was determined according
to the rock unaxial compression test results. The results of bearing capacities are as given in
section 8.4 below.

8.2.1 Rock Specimen – Un-Axial Compression test and Point Load

Ultimate Bearing capacities were estimated from rock unxial compressive test. This Ultimate
bearing pressure was assumed to be equal to that recorded from the rock unxial compressive
strength.

The choice of weathering factors associated with the rock is a critical aspect in the designing
process. The engineer in charge is tasked with the duty of determining the factor of safety
against the influence of weathering on bearing capacity of the stratum that will receive the
foundation system. The results of bearing capacities are as given in section 8.4 below.

Geotechnical Report 2018
8.3 Analysis of Settlements

According to the nature of rock detected; the type of settlements that are expected will take
place during the construction period, meaning that the proposed structures will suffer minimal
immediate settlements.

8.4 Results Obtained and Analysis

Considering the analysis procedures contained in the subchapters 8.1 to 8.3 and the
corresponding resistance parameters of the subsoil already presented; we were able to obtain
the following results:

The un-factored ultimate allowable load bearing capacity values of the weathered rock are
presented in tables below. Differential settlement is estimated to be less than 25 mm.

8.5 Quality Control and Specifications

It should be noted that for the project activities to be carried out in the projected time and
within the specified quality parameters, a quality control laboratory will need to be available at
all times, which will ensures the completion of each construction stage with strictly adherence
to project specifications.

All the works must adhere to the latest updated Construction Standards. It is important to note
that a company/firm responsible for quality control works during the construction stage will
have a task of carrying out tests on the materials that will be employed, to make sure they
comply with the specifications.

NOTES:
i. The rocks on site are weak as indicated by poor rock quality designation (See the logs).

ii. Black dense silty sand were found from depths of 0.30m to 10.0m in all boreholes
except in borehole 10, it’s important to note that although sands are incompressible,
their bearing pressure is much lower as compared to that of the rock masses and their
settlement maybe more and uneven if foundations beds are non uniform, its therefore
important to give in due considerations during design phase.

It is recommendable that further deeper investigation be done below the foundation

level to ensure these sand formations does not lay deep to influence the foundation
bearing capacity. It is also critical that these sand formations be removed and replaced
with mass concrete if encountered below foundation bed, in case their occurrences are
judged to be sever after excavation and/or further investigation, it shall be important to
consider taking the foundations to a hard rock formations below or use pile
foundations.

Geotechnical Report 2018

10. RECOMMENDATIONS

• The foundations should be taken down to a firm ground and should be protected
against ingress of storm water. However, horizontal cross section of these founding
layers are probably not going to be uniform across the site as in the areas investigated;
it is likely that greater or lesser depth to the hard strata may be encountered at
different areas over the site. Every effort should be made to found the foundations at a
firm ground or backfill the weak layers with concrete or suitable approved Gravel
materials in layers not exceeding 200mm to compaction of not less than 95%AASHTO
T99 at 85-105% optimum moisture content.

• The foundation of the structure should be designed to eliminate unacceptable

foundation and structural distress and constructed to maintain or promote constant
moisture in the foundation soils. Drainage should be provided to eliminate ponded
water.

• The foundation should always be provided with adequate drainage, and the soil
properly prepared to minimize changes in soil moisture and differential movement.
Existing trees and other heavy vegetation should be removed. New plantings of like
items installed during post construction landscaping should not be located within a
distance away from the structure ranging from 1 to 1.5 times the height of the mature
tree.

• Areas with extremely weathered rock or sand deposits encountered at or below

foundation level should be removed and replaced with mass concrete or backfilled with
suitable materials and compacted in layer not exceeding 150mm and compacted to a
maximum Dry Density of 95% ASSHTO T99 and 85-100% optimum moisture content or
the foundations need to be taken to a lower depth to avoid them.

Note: The coefficient of lateral earth pressure can exceed one if the backfill is heavily
compacted and expansive, or the natural soil adjacent to the wall is expansive.
Controlled backfills in the basements are recommended to minimize lateral pressures
and increase the economy of the foundation. Steel reinforcement can provide the
necessary restraint to horizontal earth pressures or the embankments/abutments
should be cut to a stable slope and protected by stone pitching or other desirable
construction practices, unreinforced masonry brick and concrete blocks should not be
used to construct gravity walls.

The area below the foundation beds should be observed with caution and allowance
should be provided for further geotechnical investigation below the foundation level to
ensure foundations area laid on solid hard rocks.

• Once the excavations to accommodate the foundations have been completed, the
bottom of the excavation shall be protected in all cases with a thin layer of lean
concrete f'c = 100 kg/cm2, with a thickness of at least 50mm before proceeding to place
concrete for foundation construction.
