JHS - LS2 - Number Line

This document provides information about using a number line to compare and plot numbers. It contains a pre-test to compare numbers without a number line, concept notes defining a number line and how to use it to determine if a number is greater than or less than another number by their position on the line, and examples of plotting numbers on a number line and stating the conclusions. It concludes with a post-test to have the learner compare numbers using a number line.

A. Pre-test
Directions: Compare numbers using the symbols < or >.

1. 4 8 4. −9 0

2. 10 0 5. −3 −4

3. 3 1

B. Concept Notes
I. DEFINITION
A number line consists of a line (horizontal or vertical) with two arrowheads that can be
extended to both sides infinitely. Along the line, there are numbers from the Negative Numbers
(left side of the line), Zero (center of the line), to the Positive Numbers (right side of the line).

II. USAGE
Greater or lesser number can be easily determined using a number line. To compare
numbers, follow the steps below
1. Plot the numbers on a number line.
2. A number on the left is less than (<) the number on the right.
3. A number on the right is greater than (>) the number on the left.

III. EXAMPLE
Numbers Plotting Conclusion
𝟓𝟓 < 𝟖𝟖
Since 5 is on the
𝟓𝟓 𝒂𝒂𝒂𝒂𝒂𝒂 𝟖𝟖
left of 8, therefore
5 is less than 8
𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏 > 𝟔𝟔
Since 10 is on the
𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏 𝒂𝒂𝒂𝒂𝒂𝒂 𝟔𝟔 right of 6,
therefore 10 is
greater than 6

𝟎𝟎 < 𝟓𝟓
Since 0 is on the
𝟎𝟎 𝒂𝒂𝒂𝒂𝒂𝒂 𝟓𝟓
left of 5, therefore
0 is less than 5
−𝟑𝟑 > −𝟕𝟕
Since -3 is on the
−𝟑𝟑 𝒂𝒂𝒂𝒂𝒂𝒂 − 𝟕𝟕 right of -7,
therefore -3 is
greater than -7

C. Checking for Understanding (Post Test)

2. 3 1 5. 0 1 8. −3 −5

3. 20 17 6. −9 0 9. −10 −1
