Environmental Science 2 Quarter 1 Week Name: Grade & Section: Activity No. 1 Directions

This document contains an environmental science assignment on the layers of the atmosphere for the second quarter, first week. It includes 7 activities with multiple choice questions, fill-in-the-blank, short answer, and diagramming portions about the composition and structure of the atmosphere. Students are asked to identify true/false statements about the atmosphere, label layers on a diagram, analyze a pie chart on gas composition, graph temperature data of each layer, answer questions after watching an explanatory video, and create a concept map on the composition of air in the atmosphere.

Environmental Science

2nd Quarter
1st Week
Name:
Grade & Section:

Activity No. 1
Directions:
Write TRUE on the line if the statement about atmosphere tells a correct idea, and
FALSE if it is incorrect. (10POINTS)

1. The atmosphere is made up of a gaseous layer that surrounds the earth.
2. The atmosphere is made up of 80% nitrogen.
3. 10% of the earth’s atmosphere is oxygen.
4. Neon is the most abundant gas in the atmosphere.
5. Through photosynthesis in plants, the carbon dioxide-oxygen balance
preserve.
6. Air molecules and everything else in the atmosphere are held towards the
earth by gravity.
7. Almost all weather occurs in the troposphere.
8. The stratosphere is very dry, the air there contains little water vapor.
9. The top of the mesosphere is the coldest part of the earth’s atmosphere.
10. Space shuttles and International space Stations both orbit earth within the
thermosphere.

Activity No. 2
Directions: Write the complete answer on the line. Answers can be repeated.
(10points)

-   Troposphere Stratosphere Mesosphere

Thermosphere

______________ 1. Situated directly above the mesosphere and below the exosphere.
______________ 2. The boundary between the mesosphere and the next layer.
______________ 3. The top of these layers occurs at 50km (31miles) altitude.
______________ 4. Air is warmest at the bottom of this layer near the ground level.
______________ 5. The height of this layer is 7 to 20km above the sea layer.
______________ 6. Almost all weather occurs in this layer.
______________ 7. The temperature in this layer is around 90 degrees Celsius
______________ 8. This layer extends from 90km to between 500 and 1000km above
the planet.
______________ 9. This is what others normally think of as outer space.
______________ 10. It comes from the Greek word stratum

Activity No. 3
Directions:
Make an air composition pie chart. Take picture of your output and send it to
google classroom.  (50points)
Activity No. 4
GAS COMPOSITION OF THE ATMOSPHERE
Directions: Study and understand the pie graph below and then please answer the
following questions. (30 points)

1. Which is the most abundant gas in the atmosphere?

2. About how many percent of argon can be found in the atmosphere?

3. How much percent of oxygen in the atmosphere?

4. Rank the atmospheric composition from greatest to least percentage.

5. What are the 2 most abundant gases in the atmosphere?

6. Why do you think these gases are important to us?

Activity No. 5
WHICH IS THE HOTTEST? COLDEST?
Directions:  Graph the estimated temperatures of each layer of the atmosphere and
supply the needed information in the table below. (50 points)
Activity No. 6
Directions:  Watch the video clip about the layers of the atmosphere. Then answer the
following guide questions. Use the link below to direct you to the site. (60 points)

forms on earth.

2. Characterize the four distinct layers of the atmosphere.

3. Describe what the exosphere is.

Activity No. 7
