Answer: 1.225 Btu/s, 1292 W

This document contains 3 summaries of heat transfer problems: 1) A cooling coil made of stainless steel is removing heat from a bath. The heat removal rate is calculated to be 1.225 BTU/s or 1292 Watts. 2) An equation is derived for the one-dimensional heat flux q/A through a flat plane where the thermal conductivity varies with temperature as k = A + bT + cT^3. 3) The heat flux through the walls of a polystyrene food container with interior dimensions of 0.8m x 0.6m x 0.6m is calculated to be 35.9 Watts, given interior and exterior surface temperatures of 2C and 20

Online Task 2

1. Heat Removal of Cooling Coil. A cooling coil of 1.0 feet of 304 stainless steel tubing having an
inside diameter of 0.25 in. and an outside diameter of 0.40 in. is being used to remove heat from
a bath. The temperature at the inside surface of the tube is 40℉ and 80℉ on the outside. The
thermal conductivity of 304 stainless steel is a function of temperature
𝑘 = 7.75 + 7.78𝑥10−3 𝑇
Where k is in Btu/hr.ft.℉ and T is in ℉. Calculate the heat removal in btu/s and watts.
Answer: 1.225 btu/s, 1292 W

2. Variation of Thermal Conductivity. A flat plane of thickness ∆𝑥 has one surface maintained at
T1and the other at T2. If the thermal conductivity varies according to temperature as
𝑘 = 𝐴 + 𝑏𝑇 + 𝑐𝑇 3
Where a, b, and c are constants, derive an expression for the one – dimensional heat flux q/A.

3. An inexpensive food and beverage container is fabricated from 25 – mm thick polystyrene

(k=0.023 W/m.K) and has interior dimensions of 0.8 m x 0.6 m x 0.6 m. Under conditions for which
an inner surface temperature of approximately 2℃ is maintained by an ice – water mixture and
an outer surface temperature of 20℃ is maintained by the ambient, what is the heat flux through
the container wall? Assuming negligible heat gain through the 0.8 m x 0.6 m base of the cooler,
what is the total heat load for the prescribed conditions?
Answer: 35.9 W
