Elephant Toothpaste

This document describes a project to perform an elephant toothpaste experiment for students at the Ferrini school. The experiment involves mixing hydrogen peroxide, liquid soap, and potassium iodide, which generates oxygen bubbles and foam. The objectives are to teach students how a simple molecule like oxygen can change forms from water to a deadly substance, explore science deeper, and show how important molecules are to the world. The justification is to demonstrate the significance of molecules and increase knowledge of chemistry.

Project description

In this project we will perform a chemical change with potassium iodide and

hydrogen peroxide, which generates some heat. First, concentrated hydrogen peroxide is

mixed with liquid soap. Then a small amount of catalyst (potassium iodide) is added to

achieve rapid decomposition of the hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide then

decomposes producing oxygen in the form of gas and water. The soapy water traps the

oxygen, causing a large number of bubbles, thus forming the foam.

Problematizing question

How a molecule can chance all?

Objectives

General objective: To teach the students of the ferrini school how a simple

molecule (in this experiment oxygen), can change everything, how it could go from water

to a deadly substance.

Specific objectives: - Going deeper into the subject of science.

- Doing this experiment in larger scale

- Show the importance of a simple molecule

6

Justification:

to show the importance of the molecule in the world itself, and how this simple

molecule can change the course of things H2O2 VS H2O.

It contributes information and knowledge in the area of science, since it is

important to know about something so important that shapes everything we know.

After doing this project we have more knowledge about science focusing on the

area of chemistry, so in the future we can apply this knowledge in our life.
