CHAPTER I:

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Blended mode of learning is one of the severely affected by Covid-19

pandemic nationwide. Philippine national government took a nationwide policy to

conduct distance learning for all students in Philippine to slow down the spread of

virus.

There were problems arised in the implementation of distance learning, namey;

student’s cannot be maximally supervised by the teacher during learning activities at

home, students are late in collecting drawing assignments according to dealines, and

students have not been able to manage blended learning time properly.

Time Management during blended mode of learning was particularly

interesting to be studied, since students were practicing it independently at home

without teacher’s direct supervision. Therefore, students depended solely on their

discipline in managing their learning time at home to conduct distance learning.

Theoritically, the variable of time management has direct influence on students

learning outcomes. If this time management aspect is not taken into a serious

consideration during blended mode of learning, it’s negative impact on learning

outcomes is inevitable. This justified the importance of this study.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This study is anchored on the different learning theories on how students managed

their time during blended mode of learning in Beslink College of the Philippines.

According to Ferlazzo (2020), Numerous schools will start this year in a hybrid

situation, with students going to an actual school low maintenance and spending the

excess hours in remote asynchronous instruction. With schools all over the world

redesigning because of COVID-19, blended learning is becoming a new normal.

Schools or universities start the year totally on online studying, with students

investing part of their energy in live classes while working away at their own during

other parts of the day. Online learning is defined as “learning experiences in

synchronous or asynchronous environments using different devices (e.g., mobile

phones, laptops, etc.) with internet access. In these environments, students can be

anywhere (independent) to learn and interact with instructors and other students”

(Singh & Thurman 2019). While Pastor (2020), says that in the Philippines The

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has dramatically changed the

higher education system in the Philippines with a distinctive shift in online instruction

as an effort to limit further transmission of the virus. This sudden change to online

instruction raised concern among many teachers and students because a large segment

of the population has unstable internet access and limited electronic devices.

CHAPTER II:

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents different literatures and studies conducted that are

related to the topic. This will serve as a guide to the present study. This chapter also

contains the theories that can support this study and framework to fully understand the

research.

FOREIGN LITERATURE

Numerous schools will start this year in a hybrid situation, with students going

to an actual school low maintenance and spending the excess hours in remote

asynchronous instruction. Different areas, similar to our own, will start the year totally

on online studying, with students investing part of their energy in live classes while

working away at their own during other parts of the day.

With schools all over the world redesigning because of COVID-19, blended

learning is becoming a new normal. Blended learning has been around for a while and

is the combination of traditional face-to-face instruction with aspects of online

instruction all while students are in the classroom with the teacher. Blended learning

strives to provide students the best of both face-to-face and online learning

experiences. Blended classrooms include face-to-face instruction techniques such as

direct instruction or lecture, group discussions, and small-group work while also using
BESTLINK COLLEGE OF THE PHILIPPINES

technology to provide in-class online learning that students can do at home provided

they have access to necessary technology ( Ferlazzo, 2020) .

According to Singh & Thurman (2019) Online learning can be termed as a tool that

can make the teaching–learning process more student-centered, more innovative, and

even more flexible. Online learning is defined as “learning experiences in

synchronous or asynchronous environments using different devices (e.g., mobile

phones, laptops, etc.) with internet access. In these environments, students can be

anywhere (independent) to learn and interact with instructors and other students”. The

synchronous learning environment is structured in the sense that students attend live

lectures, there are real-time interactions between educators and learners, and there is a

possibility of instant feedback, whereas asynchronous learning environments are not

properly structured. In such a learning environment, learning content is not available

in the form of live lectures or classes; it is available at different learning systems and

forums.

According to Cojocariu et al. ( 2014) “Most of the terms (online learning, open

learning, web-based learning, computer-mediated learning, blended learning, m-

learning, for ex.) have in common the ability to use a computer connected to a

network, that offers the possibility to learn from anywhere, anytime, in any rhythm,

with any means”.

LOCAL LITERATURE

Many parents and students may have heard about blended learning or online

schooling just during this season of the Covid-19 pandemic; however this kind of

guidance has been essential for the Philippine educational system for a long time now.

While the world for the most part was at that point veering toward digital platforms

for news, data, business, research, account, entertainment and education, Department

of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones stated that the Philippines has been

utilizing on the online instruction for quite a long time as of now.

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has dramatically changed the

higher education system in the Philippines with a distinctive shift in online instruction

as an effort to limit further transmission of the virus. This sudden change to online

instruction raised concern among many teachers and students because a large segment

of the population has unstable internet access and limited electronic devices (Pastor,

2020; Mirandilla-Santos, 2016)

RESEARCH METHOD

This chapter presents the methods and procedure of research applied to gather

the needed data. The research design and methods utilized in this study are elucidated

in this chapter.

This chapter explained the methodology used in data collection. The

researchers explain the Experimental Research. More information will be given on

how sampling, surveys and observation were used in collecting data.

RESEACH DESIGN

The Experimental method of research was used for this study. This study will

be carried out using quantitative approach. Under the quantitative approach, we used a

survey research design that will be used in this study is a Likert scale. We made some

question using Google Forms about managing their time during the new learning

blended mode. The survey was made up of 4 multiple-choices and 10 questions to be

rated using a 4-point Likert scale. The choices are frequently, always, sometimes and

never. These are the research designs that will be used to gather the data that is needed

for this study.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The respondents of the study are the selected 20 students during blended mode of

learning inBestlink College of the Philippines. These twenty students belong from

Bachelor of science in Psychology. The researchers are assured that these selected

repondents will give their best to answer the survey questionnaire responsibly.

SAMPLING INSTRUMENT USED

The intrument used for the researcher was random sampling. In this relevant way,

each member of the population has an equal chance of being selected as subject so

every item of this research are definitely helpful to solve the problem within this way.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The data gathered by the researcher will be primary and secondary in nature.

The primary data were source from distance or online communications, online

observations and results gathered from online survey questionnaire. Secondary data

DISCUSSION

The primary purpose of this study was to examine how’s the Time Management of the

selected participants in BS Psychology at Bestlink College of the Philipines.

We made a survey with a purpose of knowing if the students are adopting/adjusting

their time effectively to the new way of learning which is the ‘blended mode.’

The researchers conducted this research study to know if students is still using Time

Management method during this new mode of learning.

Overall, the result of the survey shows that majority of the participants is still using

Time Management method for their studies. They still follow scheduled time for

school and activities. They also have time for personal and recreational

activities, which also shows that they are managing their time effectively.

NEW CONCEPT LEARNED

The result of this study made us realize that the youths still have a drive. Despite

having this newly introduced type of learning, youths still have ways to cope up with

it using Time Management. It is clear that they may struggle in some things but they

still have Time Management skills as shown at the survey results
