Week 1 Module Mech - 1023

This document discusses three areas of engineering mechanics: statics, dynamics, and mechanics of materials. It defines key terms like particle, rigid body, and force. It also outlines the main branches of dynamics including kinematics, kinetics, rectilinear motion, and curvilinear motion.

I. INTRODUCTION
Three fundamental areas of engineering mechanics:

1. Statics and Dynamics

- devoted primarily to the study of the external effects upon rigid bodies

Statics deals with effect of force on bodies which are not moving

Dynamics deals with force effect on moving bodies

Particle is a mass point; it possesses a mass but has no size; it is an

approximate model of a body whose dimensions are negligible

Rigid Body is a definite amount of matter, the parts of which are fixed
in position relative to each other; non-deformable

Force is that which changes or tends to change the state of motion of

a body or a particle; this applies to the external effect of a force

2. Mechanics of Materials
- deals with the internal effects and deformations that are caused by the applied loads

Main Branches of Dynamics includes:

Kinematics: study of the geometry of motion. Kinematics is used to relate displacement,

velocity, acceleration, and time without reference to the cause of motion.

Kinetics: study of the relations existing between the forces acting on a body, the mass of the
body, and the motion of the body. Kinetics is used to predict the motion caused by given forces
or to determine the forces required to produce a given motion.

Rectilinear motion: position, velocity, and acceleration of a particle as it moves along a straight
line.

Curvilinear motion: position, velocity, and acceleration of a particle as it moves along a curved
line in two or three dimensions.
