7 Global Golden Rules of Safety - Rule 5 - LOTO & Work Permit - Draft

This document discusses Rule 5 of the 7 Global Golden Rules of Safety - controlling hazardous energy when repairs or cleaning equipment. It emphasizes the importance of lock out tag out (LOTO) procedures to prevent accidental startups that could injure workers. The key aspects of LOTO covered are: - Only authorized employees who have received training should perform LOTO procedures. - Employees must follow the 6 steps of LOTO - prepare for shutdown, isolate equipment, lockout/tagout, check for stored energy, and verify isolation. - Multiple locks may be needed if more than one person is working on equipment. - Employees should never remove another person's lock or bypass LOTO procedures. -

7 Global Golden Rules of Safety

Rule Nr. 5

I always control energy of equipment when repairs or

cleaning is required and ensure the permit to work is
requested and approved.

Why:
Prevention of unexpected, or unwanted start-up of
equipment while maintenance or cleaning activity is
taking place. This safety practice helps assure the safe
return home in the same way employees arrive at work.

As a manager:
I actively support all personnel in practicing Lock Out Tag
Out through training, pre-shift safety talks, job site
monitoring and co-worker observation reminders.

As an employee:
I always follow the Lantmannen 7 Safety Rules and show
care and safety to all. I practice Lock Out Tag Out
knowing that it makes a positive impact on my life at
home as well as those I work with.

YOU MUST: YOU MUST NOT:

- Evaluate your job task and look for all the potential - Remove a machine guard and reach in with any body
risks part
- Plan how to protect yourself from the risks of injury - Work under someone else’s lock
- Follow the LOTO training and policy - Assume the machine is safe without a lock to control the
- Never take short cuts potential for energy release.
- Communicate with co-workers when necessary to - Loan you lock to someone else
reduce confusion or accidental start up. - Leave your key in the lock
- Leave your lock on and go home

expressed as ‘musts’ and ‘musts nots’ – are applied by everyone, for safety
of Unibake employees and contractors.

Tag Out Safe Work Practices

7 Important Rules of LOTO:

1. Never share keys or locks

2. Do not work on equipment without LOTO when machine

person who is working on it or cleaning it.

that is just as effective as the Lockout itself. 6 Easy Steps to Follow for a Safe Lock Out Tag Out:

o Authorized Employee – An individual who has been 1. Prepare for Shutdown: The authorized user assesses the
equipment to see what types of energy are or may expose

2. Actual Shutdown: This is the step when the equipment is
o Hazardous Energy Source – Any energy source that shutdown
could cause harm to an employee such as electrical, 3. Isolate Equipment from Energy Source/s: This may mean
mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, thermal, turning off breakers, shutting off valves
4. LockOut / TagOut: Applying a lock to the switch, valve,
radioactive, suspended load (gravity related) or any plug, breaker or any other device that controls the energy

deems it necessary.
5. Check for Stored Energy: There are items such as electrical
capacitors, hydraulic systems that hold a charge or pressure
once it has been disconnected from it power source. Make
sure they are properly discharged, or drained to ensure your
safety
6. Verify the Isolation: Now it is time to; Test to make sure you
have properly and successfully locked out the equipment.
This is done by trying to simply start it back up again.

Permit to Work (PTW)

A permit to work (PTW) is a formal authorization system to control work activities and is an integral
part of safe work systems. All Unibake places should put in place a permit to work system, with
clear responsibilities of controls and authorization chain. However please note that, the permit to
work does not by itself make the job safe but is only one aspect of a safe operation. Work can be
executed safely only through the combined efforts of those involved in planning the job,
authorizing it, supervising it and those who are performing the job. The personnel involved in
performing the work activity are usually at the sharp end and most exposed to the hazards if
something were to go wrong.

A permit to work is no doubt of vital importance for high risk activities, but it is not a replacement
for the basic safety checks which the crew must carry out themselves before and for the duration
of the job.

We ALWAYS have time to work safely because ‘None are safe until all are safe!’
