SPEAKING TEST INFORMATION

Level: A1 - A2

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
PAPER FORMAT The paper contains two parts.
TIMING 8-10 minutes per pair of candidates.
NO. OF PARTS 2
INTERACTION The standard format is two candidates and one examiner.
PATTERN The examiner acts as Interlocutor and manages the interaction by asking
questions and setting up the tasks. He/she also acts as assessor to give the
scores to candidates following the assessing scales.
TASK TYPES Short exchanges with the examiner and an interactive task involving both
candidates.
MARKS Candidates are assessed on their performance throughout the test. Candidates
are not expected to produce completely accurate or fluent language, but they
are expected to interact appropriately and intelligibly. The emphasis in
assessment is on the ability to communicate clearly.
STRUCTURE AND TASKS
PART 1
TASK Each candidate interacts with the examiner.
TYPE The examiner asks the candidates questions.
AND The examiner follows an interlocutor frame to guide the conversation, ensure

FOCUS Language normally associated with meeting people for the first time, giving
information of a factual personal kind.
TIMING 5-6 minutes
PART 2
TASK Candidates interact with each other.
TYPE The examiner sets up the activity using a standardised rubric.

The examiner awards marks by applying performance descriptors from the analytical assessment scales for

Notes for teachers:

1. Teachers can find Speaking test packages at the office. Please come and take it on the test
date. Teachers can borrow to look at in advance right at the office. Please do not take it
home.

2. Teachers manage the time to do the test on the date marked in the pacing guide. According
to the test format, there will be 2 candidates for a turn, so it may take you 2 sessions of
class to give all students the test. The score records will be attached in the class file so
teachers can take turn to do the tests based on the pacing guide and make sure all students
have at least 1 speaking test/course.
