Pamantasan NG Lungsod NG Valenzuela

A 3-sentence summary of the document: The document contains 7 multi-part physics and engineering problems related to hydrostatics involving calculations of forces on submerged planes, gates, and other objects of various shapes and orientations in water. The problems require determining dimensions, weights, forces, and other quantitative factors using principles of fluid statics, buoyancy, and pressure distribution under water. Correctly solving the problems involves setting up and solving the appropriate equations for each unique scenario.

1. The side of a square plane surface is 0._1_ m and to be placed vertically below the water
surface. The immersion is such that the two edges of the square are horizontal. If it is desired
that the center of pressure be _.0_ cm from the center of gravity of the plane area, how far
below the water surface (in meters) should the center of gravity of the immersed plane should
be? In this position, what is the total force(kN) acting upon it?

2. A vertical gate _.2_ meters wide and _.8_ meters high is hinged at the upper edge and is kept
closed by the pressure of water standing 2._ _ meters deep over its top edge. Determine the
minimum force (kN) applied normally at the bottom of the gate required to open it.

3. A rectangular vertical gate , 0.9_ _ meter wide by 2._ _ meters high and weighing 2.006 kN, is
hinged at the bottom. There is water on both sides of the gate, 4.5_ _ meters on one side and
1.5_ _ meters on the other. The gate, however, is held in place by a horizontal force F applied at
the top of the gate. Under the above conditions, determine the horizontal force F, Magnitude
and direction of the resultant at the hinge.

4. AB is on one edge of a rectangular water gate hinged at B. Compute the weight “W”in kN,
fastened at the center of the gate, necessary to keep the gate from opening. The weight of the
gate itself is 17.8_ _ kN and is of uniform thickness. The length of the gate perpendicular to the
sketch is 1.5_ _ meters.

5. A circular gate 1.5_ _ meters in diameter is inclined at an angle of 45 degrees. Sea water
(S.G=1.03) stands on one side of the gate to a height of 9._ _ meters above the center of the
gate. Determine the total hydrostatic Force (kN) acting on the gate and the location of the
center of pressure from the top of the gate.

6. A 2m long, 0.5m diameter log (sp. gravity of 0. 8_ _ ) divides water as shown. Compute for the
vertical and horizontal reaction at point A.

7. Figure shown below is a gate in the form of circular arc with a central angle of 60 o and radius 2m
with one end resting on the crest of the dam. The water surface is flushed with the upper end of
the gate. Find the vertical and horizontal components of hydrostatic force (kN) acting on the
gate and their locations from point O. The gate is 3. _ _m long normal to the plane of the paper.
