Exp Lab Activity 1 - Basic Gates: Objective

This lab activity involves students testing and verifying the truth tables of basic logic gates. Students will use breadboards, integrated circuit chips, and a simulation software to construct and test NOT, AND, OR, NAND, NOR and XOR gates. They will record the truth tables for each gate in a chart and demonstrate the working circuits to their teacher. The objective is for students to become familiar with the characteristics and logic functions of common digital logic gates.

EXP LAB ACTIVITY 1 - BASIC GATES

Objective
1. To become familiar with the characteristics for the NOT, AND, OR, NAND,
NOR, and XOR gates
2. To wire and test the Integrated Circuit, IC, for each of the basic gates
3. To create and verify the truth table for each of the basic gates
4. To write the correct Boolean expression for each of the basic gates

Equipment
• Breadboard with jumper wires
• 5 volt Power Supply
• IC chips: 7400, 7402, 7404, 7408, 7432, 7486
• Digital Module
• CircuitMaker software simulation package
• Logic Probe

Experimental steps
Each integrated circuit chip (IC) is a package of gates. You are to construct,
wire and test each of the two input gate chips (7400, 7402, 7408, 7432, and
7486) to determine what the function of each chip is. In addition to these 4
two-input gate chips, you will also test a 7404 chip – which has a single input
and a single output.

Pre-LAB Analysis:

For each Integrated Circuit (IC) chip to be tested, fill in Chart 1 shown
below with:
1. IC Chip number
2. Logic function name
3. Logic function symbol
4. Logic function Truth Table
5. Logic function Boolean Equation

Circuit Maker Simulation:

Test each of the basic gates using CircuitMaker and test the logic function
on the computer simulator. Use the logical switches and LEDs to provide
the input 0’s and 1’s and to show the resulting output. Enter the result on
chart 1 for each logical function (i.e. Use the Sim column) and verifying
that the truth table obtained here matches the one that obtained in the
Pre-LAB analysis.

Breadboard Testing:

Part 1: Test the 7400, 7408 and the 7432 Integrated Circuit chips:

• Wire the circuit as shown in figure 1 shown below.

• Test each input by switching lows and highs using the switches
provided on the digital module.

• For each logical function fill the truth table recording the associated
outputs (i.e. LED ON = 1, LED OFF = 0) obtained during testing in
chart 1 below (i.e. Use the Test column).

• Show your teacher the working circuits.

 Demonstrate 7400 circuit to your teacher: _______________________

 Demonstrate 7408 circuit to your teacher: ______________________

 Demonstrate 7432 circuit to your teacher: ______________________

Part 2: Test the 7402 Integrated Circuit chip:

• Wire the circuit as is shown in figure 2 shown below. Notice the

wiring is NOT the same as the wiring needed for the 7400, 7408,
and 7432.

• Test each input by switching lows and highs using the switches
provided on the digital module.

• Fill the truth table recording the associated outputs (i.e. LED ON =
1, LED OFF = 0) obtained during testing in chart 1 below (i.e. Use
the Test column).

 Demonstrate 7402 circuit to your teacher: ______________________

Part 3: Test the 7404 Integrated Circuit chip:

• Wire the circuit as is shown in figure 3 shown below. Notice the

wiring is NOT the same as the wiring needed for the 7400, 7402,
7408, and 7432.

• Test the input by switching lows and highs using the switches
provided on the digital module.

• Fill the truth table recording the associated outputs (i.e. LED ON =
1, LED OFF = 0) obtained during testing in chart 1 below (i.e. Use
the Test column).

 Demonstrate 7404 circuit to your teacher: ______________________

Part 4: Test the 7486 Integrated Circuit chip:

• Wire the circuit as is shown in figure 1 shown below.

• Test the input by switching lows and highs using the switches
provided on the digital module.

• Fill the truth table recording the associated outputs (i.e. LED ON =
1, LED OFF = 0) obtained during testing in chart 1 below (i.e. Use
the Test column).

 Demonstrate 7486 circuit to your teacher: ______________________
