I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, 70% of the students are expected to:
a. Identify the four kinds of sentence structure
b. Classify sentences according to structure
c. Construct sentences using simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex
sentences

Materials: Power point presentation, strips

III. Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Checking of Attendance
3. Review of past lesson

B. Lesson Proper
1. Preparation/Motivation
The teacher will show sentences to the students randomly, then
students will be asked to read the sentences.
Read the following sentences:
We went to the beach.
We were in Toronto when we went to the beach.
This is the new pen which I bought yesterday.
Later on, the teacher will ask the students to guess the topic for the meeting.

2. Presentation
The teacher will present the lesson “Kinds of sentences according to
structure”
3. Discussion
First, the teacher will define what is a clause and discuss about main
clause and subordinate clause with given examples. Then, the teacher will
introduce to the students the four types of sentences according to structure.
Each type will be defined and discuss along the corresponding examples.
 Clause – group of words that can include subject and a verb

1. Independent clause/main clause – group of words that can


stand on its own as a sentence

Ex: We went to the beach.

2. Dependent clause/Subordinate Clause – group of words that


contains a subject and verb but has no complete thought.

Ex: When we were in Toronto.


Which was very beautiful.

Unless you study very well.


Because I woke up late.

 Types of sentences according to structure:

1. Simple Sentence – is a sentence with one independent


clause and has no subordinate clause.

Ex: Christine and Philip studied.


Christine studied and wrote.

2. Compound Sentence – is made up of two independent


sentence, which uses coordinating conjunction to
connect the sentences.
The most common coordinator are: and, or, nor, so, but,
for, yet, when

Ex: Lilly travelled to Europe last summer but Dan


when to Hong Kong.

It was raining and I did not have any umbrella.

3. Complex Sentence – a sentence containing one


independent clause and at least one subordinate clause.

Ex: When he finishes college, Tim hopes to move to


British Columbia.

This is the new pen which I bought yesterday.


4. Compound complex sentence – contains two or more
independent clauses and at least one subordinate clause.

Ex: David was confused about the assignment that was


due on Tuesday, so he asked his teacher for help.

When you are ready, I will call the store and talk to
Reed.

4. Generalization
To sum up the discussion, the teacher will ask a question:

 What are the four kinds of sentence structure?

5. Application
Divide the students into four groups. With the given sentences,
classify each according to sentence structure.
(Do this on a ¼ sheet of paper.)

1. I saw my friend.
2. Joe went to the store.
3. It was raining but I did not have any umbrella.
4. She got a good grade for she studied hard.
5. This is the new pen which I bought yesterday.
6. When I saw my daddy, I was very glad.
7. Jane was working and Annie was shopping when their mom
arrived.
8. Because I paid attention, I got an A on the test and I was very
happy.

6. Evaluation
A. Identify the types of clauses by underlining independent clause
one and dependent clause twice. Then indicate which type of
sentences each one is.

Example:

Jane decided to volunteer at the Greyhound Rescue Shelter


because she loves dogs. _____________

1. I used to have a beautiful plant by my window, but it died


when I forgot to water it. __________
2. I’ll be waiting for you in the lobby, so just come down when
you’re ready. __________
3. The student finished his essay well before the end of the
exam; nonetheless, he was exhausted from the effort of
writing and didn’t feel like editing his work. __________
4. My favorite movie, which I’ve seen at least five times, depicts
an epic battle between good and evil. __________
5. I was writing an essay while listening to music. __________

B. Apply your understanding on the four sentence patterns by


writing sentences according to instructions below.

1. Write a simple sentence.


2. Write a compound sentence that joins the clauses with a
comma and a coordinating conjunction.
3. Write a compound sentence that joins the clauses with a
semicolon (;)
4. Write a compound sentence that joins the clauses with a
semicolon, a transitional word or phrase, and a comma.
5. Write a compound- complex sentence.

7. Assignment
On a 1 whole sheet of paper, write an essay about your likes and
dislikes using the sentence structure.
