Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic

Every composite number can be expressed
(factorised) as a product of primes, and this
factorisation is unique, apart from the order in
which the prime factors occur.

The first correct proof was given by Carl Friedrich Gauss. The
Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic has many applications,
both within mathematics and in other fields
Example: Prime Factorization of 2025
Applications of Fundamental Theorem of
Arithmetic.

HCF(a, b): = Product of the smallest power of each

common prime factor in the numbers a & b.
Applications of Fundamental Theorem of
Arithmetic.

HCF(a, b): = Product of the smallest power of each

common prime factor in the numbers a & b.

LCM(a, b): = Product of the greatest power of each

prime factor, involved in the numbers a & b.
Applications of Fundamental Theorem of
Arithmetic.

HCF(a, b): = Product of the smallest power of each

common prime factor in the numbers a & b.

LCM(a, b): = Product of the greatest power of each

prime factor, involved in the numbers a & b.

Verification: for any two positive integers a and b,

HCF (a, b) × LCM (a, b) = a × b
Q1. Show that each of the following is a
composite number:
(i) 5 x 11 x 13 + 13
(ii) 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 + 5
Solution :

(i) 5×11×13+13
= 13 (5×11×1+1)
= 13 (56)
By definition of Composite number
5×11×13+13 is a composite Number

(ii) 6×5×4×3×2×1+5
=5 (6×1×4×3×2×1+1)
= 5 (145)
By definition of composite number
6×5×4×3×2×1+5 is a composite number
Q2. Check whether can end with the digit 0
for any natural number n
Solution :
If any number ends with the digit 0, it should be divisible
by 10 or in other words, it will also be divisible by 2 and 5
as 10 = 2 × 5
Prime factorisation of 6n = (2 ×3)n

It can be observed that 5 is not in the prime factorisation

of 6n.

Hence, for any value of n, 6n will not be divisible by 5.

Therefore, 6n cannot end with the digit 0 for any natural

number n.
