Instructions:
Answer the following questions in less than 200 words each.
1. Read Turing’s original paper on AI (Turing, 1950). In the paper, he discusses several objections to his proposed enterprise
and his test for intelligence.
a. (25 pts) Which objections still carry weight? Are his refutations valid? Can you think of new objections arising from
developments since he wrote the paper?
I believe that the objections that still carry weight are the consciousness and the lady Lovelace objection.
As computers are considered machines thus they do not have the capacity to think, Turing researched and
investigated this situation and its possible outcome of Artificial Intelligence in the next years to come. The two
mentioned objections, the consciousness and the lady Lovelace, addresses the topics of machines as incapable of
feeling things and creating emotions within itself (consciousness), and machines are only capable of what we wanted
them to do, therefore no mind to think on itself and will only do what is programmed within them.
b. (25 pts) In the paper, he predicts that, by the year 2000, a computer will have a 30% chance of passing a five-minute
Turing Test with an unskilled interrogator. What chance do you think a computer would have today? In another 50
years?
The article’s definition of Turing test is a simple test that tests the machine’s communication ability. It is
stated that once a machine passes this test, the machine therefore exhibits a capability in communication. Although
this tests the capabilities of a machine, this does not guarantee that the machine is able to have an intelligence same
as humans. I believe that the technologies we have today has about 85% chance of passing the test. This is because
of the different advancements we encountered as the rise of technology is happening today. I believe that in another
50 years, the technology will definitely surpass the test and pass it at a 100% rate as the technology continues to
advance as time passes.
2. (25 pts) Suppose we extend Evans’s ANALOGY program so that it can score 200 on a standard IQ test. Would we then have
a program more intelligent than a human? Explain.
In the reading, Evan’s Analogy is supposed to solve various analogy problems specialized only for IQ test. If we extend the
analogy program, and it will have supposed to surpass a standard IQ test, it will only show how it will ace an exam intended
for humans but will not mean that it will be more intelligent than humans. As this is how programmers programmed the
machine, it will only excel in the specific test but not in the other aspects. No program would be more intelligent than a
human as all programs were made by humans. Humans and machines cannot be compared to each other as they are made
from different entities.
Artificial Intelligence refers to the programs and machines that are intended to think like humans and mimic their
actions. AI is both science and engineering as these two components plays an important role on the system of an AI. Through
science, this helps us understand the concept of how the human mind works while engineering helps incorporate this
understanding through programs and machines in which would help humans in their daily lives. As an example, this can be
used in the medical industry like how a machine could replace an organ of the body that can function just like a real one.
