SENTENCES
What Is A Sentence

➢ Set of words that is complete in


itself, typically containing a subject
and predicate, conveying a
statement, question, exclamation, or
command, and consisting of a main
clause and sometimes one or more
subordinate clauses.
4 Types Of Sentences

➢ Simple sentence

➢ Compound sentence

➢ Complex sentence

➢ Complex-compound sentence
Simple Sentence

➢ Does not have to be actually short

➢ Not necessarily easy to understand

➢ Example: I like sentences.


Compound Sentence

➢ At least two independent clauses


joined by a comma, semicolon or
conjunction

➢ Example: I like sentences and I like


cake
➢ Could have also been: I like
sentences. I like cake.
Complex Sentence

➢ Contains an independent clause &


one or more dependent clauses
➢ Example: I like cake with chocolate.

➢ Example: I like cake and eat it all


day.
Complex-Compound Sentence

➢ At least two independent clauses &


one or more dependent clauses
➢ Example: Although Alex likes cake,
yesterday he ate vegetables, and
didn’t throw up.
