Using prepositions / prepositional phrases

A C B

Pattern (except between): A is (preposition) B.


Example: A is across from B.
A is along ABC Street.
Pattern (between): C is between A and B.

Using Verbs and Adverbs to give directions


Pattern: Verb + adverb
Example: Go straight / down / up / past
Turn right / left
Walk past (something)
Other pattern: Verb + Noun…
Example: Take the second street on your left. (= Turn left on the second street.)

Transitional Words
In giving directions, we use these words to tell someone what to do next.
After that,
Next,
then
Example: Go straight on. Then turn left on ABC Street. After that, turn right on
DEF Street. Walk past the store and you will see the gym next to it.

Asking about direction


To ask about directions use these questions:

How can I get to . . . (from here)?


Can you show me the way to...?
Can you tell me how to get to . . . ?
Where is . . . ?
Is there a/any … nearby / around here?

Sample Dialogue
A: Excuse me. I need to send a letter to my sister. Is there a
post office nearby?
B: Yes, there is. It is on Green Street, across from the
skyscraper. From here, go straight then turn right on Green
Street. You will find the post office on your left.
A: I got it. Thank you!

When you couldn’t remember or understand the direction given, you can say the following
sentences:
I’m sorry. I didn’t get it. Could please repeat that? / Could you say that again please?
