Adding –s to verbs and plurals

Read the following paragraphs and add –s where it is needed:


 At the end of plural nouns e.g. book, books
 At the end of 3rd person singular verbs e.g. The company sells real estate.
The student lives near the university.
Remember that adjectives never have a plural form e.g. the new computers.

Paragraph 1

Living aboard a space station in orbit around the Earth for month at a time pose
problem for astronauts’ body as well as for their mind. One major problem involve
maintaining astronauts’ physical health. Medical treatment may be day or even week
away, as there may not be a doctor on board. Illness such as appendicitis or ulcers could
be fatal in space because of the delay in getting to a doctor. Another problem is the
potential for bone deterioration. In a weightless environment, the body produce less
calcium. Astronauts must exercise at least three hour a day to prevent bone loss. A
second major problem is maintaining astronauts’ mental health. Being confined for long
period of time in dark and hostile space often produce stress. Loneliness and boredom
are other psychological concern.

Paragraph 2

Genetic research has produced both exciting and frightening possibilities.


Scientist are now able to create new form of life in the laboratory due to the development
of gene splicing. The ability to create life in the laboratory could greatly benefit
mankind. For example it is very expensive to obtain insulin from natural source, but
through genetic research, scientist have now developed a way to manufacture it
inexpensively in the laboratory. Another beneficial application of gene splicing is in
agriculture. Genetic engineer have created a new tomato that doesn’t spoil quickly.
Consequently, farmers can now let the tomato ripen on the plant and develop full flavor
and color before they’re picked-- no more green flavorless tomato in grocery store! In
addition, genetic engineer have created larger fish, frost-resistant strawberry, and more
productive cow.

Paragraph 3

Writing, particularly academic writing, is not easy. It take study and practice to
develop this skill. For both native speaker and new learner of English, it is important to
note that writing is a process, not a “product”. This mean that a piece of writing, whether
it is a composition for an English class or a lab report for a chemistry class, is never
complete; that is, it is always possible to review and revise.
