Prelab 1 Ques 4 Graph

This document is a pre-lab assignment for an introductory physics lab on measurements and error analysis. It contains 4 questions asking students to: 1) determine the least count, length, and uncertainty of a measurement using a scale; 2) read a measurement from vernier calipers and calculate the uncertainty; 3) calculate statistical values from measurement data and combine measurements from two students; and 4) perform a linear regression to determine the acceleration due to gravity from timed ball drop measurements and compare to the accepted value. Students are asked to show their work and include uncertainty for any calculated values.

Introduction to Measurements and Error Analysis

Lab Section Day & Time : _____________________________

Name: ____________________________________________________________ Date: ______________________________

Pre – laboratory Assignment

Due at the beginning of your lab class. Answer all questions. Only some will be graded, for a total of 10 points.

1. Determine the least count and find the length of the gray rod and uncertainty associated with the value.
The scale is in centimeters.

Answer: Least Count __________ cm Length __________  __________ cm

2. Michael is using a caliper to measure the diameter of glass bead. What
is the reading in cm on the vernier calipers shown in the figure to the
right. Include in your answer below the uncertainty associated with the
value.

Answer: Diameter ____________  _______________ cm

3. Two students, named Alice, Joe and Al make measurements in m of the length of a table using a meter
stick. Each their measurement is tabulated in the table below.

L1 L2 L3 〈𝐿〉* 𝜎 𝛼〈 〉

Alice 1,4717 1,4711 1,4722

Joe 1.4753 1.4759 1.4756
*The actual length of the table is 1.4715 m was determined by very sophisticated laser
measurement techniques.
3a. Apply Eqs. 1 , 2 and   4 see lab manual to calculate the mean 〈𝐿〉 , standard deviation 𝜎 and
standard error 𝛼〈 〉 for Alice’s and Joe’s measurements of length and record their values in the table
above.
3b. Alice and Joe wish to combine their data to get an average of these two independent measurements and
find the uncertainty in this common mean value. Your answer must include the uncertainty associated with
this weighted average value. Hint: see section “Combining data from repeated experiments” in the lab
manual for further details on this calculation .

Answer: Length ______________  ___________________ m

t2 with error bars. Use the Max-Min graphical 1.3 1.69 0.033 7.59 0.45
method described in the lab manual to draw a line of best fit and find the slope and error in the slope.

4b. Use the results you obtained in part a to determine the experimental value of the acceleration due to
gravity and their uncertainties and compare this value with its table true value, 9.80665 m/s2.
