Algebra II Midterm 2021 (Sem 2)

This document provides 12 multi-part math problems involving simplifying, factoring, expanding, solving equations, graphing functions, and applying exponential and logarithmic concepts. The problems cover topics such as: simplifying algebraic expressions; dividing polynomials; expanding expressions using Pascal's triangle; factoring polynomials; writing inverse functions; solving various types of equations; modeling population growth and house value appreciation over time using exponential functions; writing exponential equations in logarithmic form and vice versa; solving logarithmic equations; graphing translated functions; and applying an exponential model to predict future prices with inflation. The document tests a wide range of algebra, pre-calculus, and basic calculus skills.

1.

Simplify: (8)
a) (3x2 - 5x + 8) – (2x – 4x2 + 3)

b) (12x2 – x) – (6 – 9x2 + x7 - 8x)

c) 3a2b2 (8a2 – 2ab – b2)

d) (2x2 + xy - y) (y2 + 3x)

2. Divide by using any method of your choice: (4)
a) (3x2 – 8x + 4) ÷ (x – 2)

b) (2x3 + 14x2 – 4x – 48) ÷ (2x + 4)

3. Expand by using Pascal’s Triangle: (4)
a) 5(x2 – 2y3)3

b) (x – 3)5

4. Factor each expression: (6)

a) 12x2 + 3x – 24x – 6
b) x3 + 64

c) y3 – 125

5. Write the inverse of each function: (4)

3𝑥+1
a) f(x) = 7

5𝑥
b) f(x) = –2
2
4. Solve logarithmic and exponential equations: (10)
a) log3 (x – 5) = 2

b) 2x+6 = 4

c) log2 (7x + 1) = log2 (2 - x)

d) 4x = 10

e) log9 x2 = 5
5. The population of a small coastal resort town, currently 3400, grows at a rate of 3% per
year. This growth can be expressed by the exponential equation P = 3400 (1 + 0.03) t,
where P is the population after t years. Find the number of years it will take for the
population to exceed 10,000 people. (4)

6. Write each exponential equation in logarithmic form: (4)

a) 63 = 216
b) X4 = 625
7. Write each logarithmic equation in exponential form: (4)

a) log1.2 1.44= 2
b) log0.5 8 = -3

8. Solve: (8)

a) log x + log (x + 9) = 1

b) log 5x – log (15.5) = 2

c) 5x-3 = 600
d) 2x > 4x-1

10. Some real estate agents estimate that the value of a house could increase about 4%
each year.
a. Write a function to model the growth in value for a house valued at $100,000.
y_1 b. Graph the function.
c. A house is valued at $100,000 in 2005. Predict the year its value will be at least
$130,000. (4)
11. Below is the graph of y = 2x.

12. If the rate of inflation is 1.9% per year, the future price p(t) (in dollars) of a certain item
can be modeled by the following exponential function, where t is the number of years
from today.

P(t) = 800 (1.019) t

Find the price of the item 5 years from today and 8 years from today. Round your
answers to the nearest dollar as necessary. (2)
