The document summarizes a thermodynamics problem and solution. The problem asks to calculate the heat transferred when 100J of work is done on a system consisting of 1 mole of an ideal gas at constant temperature. The solution states that for an ideal gas undergoing isothermal expansion, the change in internal energy is zero. It applies the first law of thermodynamics that the change in internal energy equals heat transferred minus work done. Since the change in internal energy is zero and work done is -100J, the heat transferred must equal 100J.

PROBLEM 02 – 0046: Calculate the heat transferred when 100J of work is done on a system consisting of 1 mole of an ideal gas. At constant temperature, ΔE = 0 for the expansion of an ideal gas.
Solution: A statement of the first law of thermodynamics is expressed as ΔE = q – w where ΔE = change in internal energy of the system q = quantity of heat w = work done In this problem, work is done on the system and so w is negative. (Note that we are adopting the convention that work done on the system is negative.) Since ΔE = 0 for an isothermal expansion of an ideal gas, ΔE = 0 = q – w ∴ q = w or q = – 100J As a result, 100J of heat must be transferred from the system to maintain isothermal conditions.
