Xtru-Therm Data Sheet

The document describes the Xtru-Therm piping system, which uses an HDPE outer casing and polyurethane foam insulation. It can be used for both above and below ground applications operating from -40°C to 140°C. The system includes straight pipes as well as compatible fittings manufactured using roto-molding or extrusion welding techniques. It lists several applications such as district heating and geothermal systems.

Xtru-Therm

HDPE Jacketed Pre-Insulated Piping System

Description
Xtru-Therm piping is available for both above ground and buried piping applications. The system is
manufactured using either Perma-Pipe’s state-of-the-art foam spray process for pipe of 100mm (4”) upto
1800mm (72”) diameter, or foam injection process for pipe below 100mm (4”). Both processes utilize an
HDPE outer casing, providing a water-tight jacket with a high level of mechanical protection.

The Xtru-Therm system is supported by a

range of fully compatible fittings,
XTRU-THERM

manufactured using either Perma-Pipe’s

innovative one-piece Roto-Mold HDPE
jackets, or an extrusion welded HDPE
jacket, both combined with a sophisticated
foam injection process, ensuring security
of performance equal to that of the straight
pipe in the system.

Xtru-Therm is suitable for applications

having an operating temperature in the
range of -400C to 1400C
(-320F to 2840F).

Features
Service Pipe Material
Carbon Steel Available as per BS, EN, ASTM, APL5L, DIN and IS specifications. Industry norm as
it is fire-resistant, durable and ideal for high pressure application.
Stainless Steel Recommended for special industrial applications or other applications that have
stringent corrosion resistance requirements.
ABS Fast assembly, no corrosion, lower pressure drop as compared to steel. Not

XTRU-THERM
recommended for pipe sizes greater than 200mm (8 inches).
HDPE Excellent ID/OD corrosion resistance, relatively lower costs. Acceptable option for
pipe sizes below 250 mm (10 inches).
GRP/FRP Light weight and handles corrosive elements very well.

Insulation Material
Polyurethane (PU) Xthru-Therm PU foam insulated piping systems can be produced in compliance to
the EN 253 standard for District Heating. Default specification for buried piping
applications as it offers lower thermal conductivity than PIR foam.
Polyisocyanurate (PIR) Specified for above ground applications due its fire-retardant properties.

Insulation Specifications
Density The foam density can be controlled to meet the compressive strength and thermal
conductivity requirements of the application. Perma-Pipe's Engineering Department
can assist with heat-loss, stress and load calculations to select the appropriate
density to meet application/standard requirements.
Thickness The foam thickness can be controlled to meet with application and product standard
requirements. This product can be produced in accordance with EN 253 specified
insulation thicknesses.

Casing
High Density Specified for underground applications to provide a bonded system and the best
Polyethylene (HDPE) mechanical and vapour protection. The casing thickness can be adjusted to suit
design requirements. Please refer to Perma-Pipe guide specification for information
or contact us for assistance with specifying a casing thickness to suit your specific
requirements.
High Density Option feature to provide the topography for locking the pipe into an outer concrete
Polyethylene (HDPE) - weight coating.
Shear Key

Bonding Film
Polyethylene Ensures perfect bonding between the casing and the foam layer.
Aluminium Ensures perfect bonding between the casing and the foam layer and acts as a
diffusion barrier to prevent escape of the cell gases from the foam.

Service Pipe Coating

Epoxy Default specification for low and medium temperature applications/ This is the most
widely used coating for industrial applications.
Urethane Elastomers Recommended for direct burial in all types of soils.
Zinc Excellent coating for high temperature applications.

End-Finishing
Seamless End-Seals Provides a leak spread limiting system and is specified as the default specification for
Xtru-Therm piping.
Square Cut This option is available if specified by the customer.

Fittings
Elbows, Tees's and Reducers are available for all angles with either a seamless
moulded casing or an extrusion welded casing.

Leak Detection
Leak detection cables can be installed prior to insulating the piping system. The
number of leak detection cables to be incorporated on the application and project
piping systems and without leak detection cables for above ground piping systems
layout. For flexibility and redundancy, the standard product is offered with two leak
detection cables per pipe for buried piping.

Skin Effect Heat Tracing

Spool Fabrication Spools can be factory fabricated and insulated by welding tracer tubes and/or a tube
for a fiber-optic temperature sensing cable prior to insulation and casing of the piping
system.
