VISUALIZING VOLUME OF A CUBE AND RECTANGULAR PRISM,
NAMING THE APPROPRIATE UNIT OF MEASURE USED FOR
MEASURING VOLUME AND CONVERTING CUBIC UNITS

Let’s Recall
Find the area of each circle.
1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
16 cm 32 cm 19 m 26 m 30 m

Lesson 1: Visualizing the Volume of a Cube

and Rectangular Prism (M5ME-IVc-77)

Let’s Understand
Let us
This is 1 cubic box.
The figure at the right contains 36 cubes.
Its volume is 36 cubic units.

Study these examples:

A box is 6 cm long, 4 cm wide, and 3 cm tall. What is its volume?
Let us visualize the problem.
To find the volume of the
3 cm figure, we need to know the number of
height 4 cm width cubes in the whole figure by
6 cm length multiplying the number of rows by the
number of column and by the number
V = 6 rows X 4 columns x 3 layers of layers.
= 72 cubes
Let V be the volume of a rectangular prism. If l is the length, w is the width, and
h is the height of the rectangular prism, then
V=lxwxh
=6x4x3
= 72 cm3

Therefore, the volume of the rectangular prism is 72 cubic centimeters.

Let’s Apply
Count the cubic units to find the volume of each.
1. 2. 3.

V = _______ V = _______ V = _______

Let’s Analyze
Complete the drawing. Identify the number of unit cubes in your drawing.
1. _____cubic units

2. _____ cubic units

3. _____cubic units

4. _____cubic units

Lesson 2: Naming the Appropriate Unit of Measure Used for

Measuring the Volume of a Cube and Rectangular Prism (M5ME - IVc -78)

Let’s Understand

Any unit of length gives a corresponding unit of volume, namely the volume of a
cube whose side has the given length. For example, a cubic centimeter (cm3) would be
the volume of a cube whose sides are one centimeter (1 cm) in length.
In the International System of Units (SI), the standard unit of volume is the cubic
meter (m3). Metric System also includes,
cubic meter (m3) used to measure large amount of space occupied.
cubic decimeter (dm 3)
cubic centimeter (cm 3)
cubic millimeter (mm 3) used to measure the small amount of space occupied.

Let’s Analyze
Tell the unit of measure appropriate to measure the volume of the following. Write m3,
dm , cm3, and mm3.

_____ 1. Table _____ 6. Swimming pool

_____ 2. book _____ 7. Rubik’s cube
_____ 3. kitchen cabinet _____ 8. medicine cabinet

_____ 5. door _____ 10. bedroom

Lesson 3: Converting cu. cm to cu. m and Vice Versa; cu. cm to L

and Vice Versa (M5ME - IVd -80)

Let’s Understand

Example 1 How many cubic meters are in 500,000 cu. cm?

Solution:
First, start with the conversion from cm to m. 100 cm = 1 m
A cubic meter (1 m 3) = 1 m x 1 m x 1 m
Substitute the conversion factor for meter to centimeter
1 m3 = (100 cm) x (100 cm) x (100 cm)
1 m3 = 1,000,000 cm3

Now, let’s convert 500,000 cm 3 to m3.

Multiply the conversion factor to the 500,000 cm 3. Put the unit you want to be cancelled
out in the denominator.

500,000 cm3 x 1 m3 = 500,000 m3 = 0.5 m3

1 1,000,000 cm3 1,000,000
Answer: 500,000 cm is equal to 0.5 m3.

Example 2 How many cubic centimeters are in 4 cubic meters?

Solution: Multiply the conversion factor to the 4 m 3. Put the unit you want to be cancelled out
in the denominator.

4 m3 x 1,000,000 cm3 = 4,000,000 cm3

1 m3
Answer: There are 4,000,000 cm3 in 4 m3.

Example 3 How many liters in 7,158 cm3?

Solution: Use the conversion table 1000 cm3 = 1000 mL = 1 L

7,158 cm3 x 1 L = 7,158 = 7.158 L

1000 cm3 1,000
Answer: There are 7.158 L in 7,158 cm 3.

Example 4 How many cubic cm in 2.18 L?

Solution: Multiply the conversion factor to 2.18 L. Put the unit you want to be cancelled out in
the denominator.
2.18 L x 1000 cm3 = 2,180 cm3
1L
Answer: There are 2,180 cm 3 in 2.18 L.

1. 1,526 cm3 = ______ m3
2. 3,455 cm3 = _____ m3
3. 5 m3 = ______ cm3
4. 4.215 L = _____ cm3
5. 250,000 cm3 = _____ L

Let’s Analyze
