Web 2.0 Assignment

Name of Tool: Canva

Tool Description:

Canva is a remarkable web 2.0 platform founded in Sydney, Australia specifically used

for graphic design. This platform is used to create social media graphics, posters, presentations,

documents, flyers, and many other options of visual content. What makes this website unique is

the fact that it offers many templates to choose from to design your piece. This website is great

for many people who are not experienced with using photoshop or have a good head start for

their project. Since this website provides you with many templates to choose from, whether it is

for school, birthday party, business, or even a resume, they have a template for any type of theme

you can think of. This website also provides you with the option to add your own pictures to the

templates and change up the colors to fit your liking. You can also type in any word of your

choice, and it will provide a numerous options of clip art to choose from. This provides you with

many options to get your project started and gives you great ideas as well instead of starting on

an empty canvas.

Cost of Tool:

This web 2.0 tool is free to use for the most part when you are looking to create. You can

create from any genre of visuals created for your interest, and they even provide animated visuals
to work with. There is an option to try Canva Pro for only $12.99 a month, added up to $119.99

yearly. There is an option to try Canva Pro for free for 30 days as well when you make your

account, and can activate it at any time. It gives you a full description of what you can get when

you dive into Canva Pro. You can unlock 75 million + premium photos, videos and elements,

which includes 3000+ premium fonts, 420,000 + premium templates. You can create with ease

using Magic Resize, Background Remover and premium animations. You can also stay

organized with Brand Kit and Content Planner, extra folders, and an additional 100B storage.

Subjects and Grade Levels Suggested:

Canva is a suitable platform used for subjects mainly for art, and is used for designing

projects that can be shared with other students in the classroom. This platform could be suitable

for an English class to design a poster for a certain project the children would be doing, or a

History poster. The age best used for this platform to be used would be for children who are

knowledgeable in understanding how to work around with templates and are handy with an iPad

or a computer. This platform seems the most appropriate for students in Middle School through

High School. This platform is very organized and can be used as a portfolio for students,

especially art students looking forward to looking more deep into graphic design. There are

folders integrated into the platform that include the designs they have created, the designs they

have liked, purchased, shared, and uploaded as well as trash. You can also create a team in

Canva, which allows you to team up with classmates to work on a project together and to share

each other’s ideas.

Educational Value:

This platform is a very engaging platform for the students to get involved with whether

the assignment may be. The subject is enhanced in a way where it can involve the creative
process in the lesson. This platform is just like a PowerPoint presentation, where it allows the

student to create educational content in a creative manner it provides the student to take control

of what their assignment looks and provides. Regardless of the subject being introduced with the

assignment, it will help the student understand their subject manner in a more understanding

way, as well as teaching their information to the classroom in a creative way as well. Visual

learning is very important, hence why PowerPoint presentations are important. Canva as well

provides areas where the students could even use it to make flyers for a certain organization they

are a part of, or even an event that could be happening in their school. This platform can also

provide an understanding of how to be more organized with their work, and be able to design a

project that involves information that are relatable to each other. Visuals work with information

in visual content to provide a more emotional value to the work being presented.

Classroom Use: The first way that students in my content area could use this platform is

design a flyer for a pretend event that they will be provided to make. This flyer will be made

specifically for an event at an art gallery that the students need to create and discuss some art

principles integrated to describe their art gallery and why people should attend this exhibition.

The students will create and provide information and art of their choice to be presented on the

flyer to attract the viewers. The second way I could have the students work with this platform is

to create their portfolio for their future work, especially if they want to progress in the art field.

This platform creates an atmosphere where the students can feel comfortable using it to be

independent with their creativity. The organized aspect this platform provides will let the

students keep up with how they can use the platform and even integrate this platform with their

other subjects. The third way I could have the students use this platform is to help them with

understanding how to come up with ideas regarding what is in their field. The problem with
asking a student to create content from an empty canvas is giving the student more stress to come

up with an idea. This platform gives them ideas to create something and branch off of the small

template to create something golden regarding their own interest.

User Experience:

Canva is a platform where I often use it all the time for my design and art classes. I have

used it before in the past where I have made posters in general or for events, and navigating it is

very easy and I do not even have to use the help button to learn how to use it, which is very vital.

I enjoy how they provide you with different designs that work with different themes, and there

are many different themes that match the color schemes of the templates. I dislike how some of

the features are locked for Canva Pro, but it does not get in the way of my designing. I have

designed posters that looked like I have created them in photoshop, and they look very

professional. The experience could be the same for students, and they would have fun with all

the different examples and options to choose from. This will really enlighten their experience

with the subject learning at hand, and the platform will help them stay engaged with the material.

The students will have fun with this platform, and would want to use it for their own personal

hobbies and creations outside of class as well.

Tutorial:

Step one- Click on the “sign up” button at the top right of the website, and it will ask you

whether you would like to sign up using Google, Facebook, or email. If you have an account

already, please press Log in.

Step two- Once you have created your account or signed in, you will be brought to the Home

page. You have the choice to pick which visual content you would like to create, ranging from

flyers to posters to start from scratch. Your other choice is to scroll down the page to observe

templates already made by other people.

Step three- Once you pick what type of visual content you choose to make, you have options of

what type of templates you would like to start with. I have chosen the poster option for this

tutorial, so I have chosen a Back In Business poster. I will be making a poster convincing the

audience why teachers should teach Social Responsibility in the Classroom.

Step four- I have used the different feature options to duplicate the chat bubble, and have deleted

all the information in the template that I do not wish to keep. You can go to the Elements option,

and type in any Keyword you would like to find a numerous option of clipart to relate to your

piece.

Step Five- Once you have finished adding

whatever visual options on the left side panel works for your piece, go ahead and click Print

Poster to have it shipped to your house, Share with a friend, or Save it to your computer to

upload anywhere.

Step Six- Once you are finished designing and saving, go back to the Home page by clicking

Home on the top left, and click on All your designs to access your work and keep your portfolio
organized. You can also access Shared with you, Brand Kit, to create your own logo, Create a

Team, and your folders.
