The Story of the Moth: Significance to Rizal’s Life and Personal Reflection
In the early childhood of Rizal, numerous desirable events happened in his life which are viewed as
relative factors to the development of his nationalistic fervor and one of them is her mother’s story narration
of the Story of the Moth. With this story, Jose Rizal was able to deeply stirred his thoughts and therefore
become so significant throughout his journey in seeking for the attainment of the long denied freedom and
independence of our country.
As Jose Rizal grew up, the story indeed become so significant in his life as this had able him to amend
his perspective in different aspects of discipline and how the story signifies the social, political, and economic
issues that was happening in that period. Because of this story he realized that life is very important behind
the secret of all illusions. Later on, Rizal himself felt that the moth’s tale could serve as an allegory of his own
destiny. He then associated himself with the moth who was fond of the light. He ultimately wanted to reach
and touch the light like the moth. The light of which he compared to education, success, and freedom.
Although his mother warned him of the possibilities of him dying, he was still attracted to the light. He
wanted to seek wisdom. He wanted to be enlightened. And it is evident in his time when the Philippines was
still a colony of the Spain, he sought for reforms and change for the good of his countrymen. He continued to
strive hard in order to save our country. He studied medicine and different courses in order to help our fellow
citizen to claim their rights and freedom. Just like the moth that follow the light, he chose to fight the
Spaniards through his intellectual perspective. Even though he disobeyed his mother just like the moth, he
kept fighting for the liberty of our country. Due to his patriotism to our land he faced the consequences of his
action like the moth, but he didn’t regret the things that he had done, he died not just for himself but for the
sake of our country’s freedom. Through the story, it gave him a lesson that if one must succeed, he must take
risks and prepare for the worst consequences. Without courage, there will be no glory. And as he said
Filipino’s is worth dying for.
Moreover, through this story, I was able to realize and reflect in my life that like the moth and Jose
Rizal I conclude myself as attracted to the light. I mean light that symbolize the continuous quest for wisdom,
success, freedom in every day's situation and likewise wanted to be enlightened. Through the story, I was
able to realize that sometimes we are consumed with what we want in life and what we believe will make us
happy, we let go all our inhibitions and go and in turn our sense of reasons almost disappears. What we think
will make us happy, doesn't always turn out the way we predict to. Thus, I was also able to realize the
importance of obeying and listening to our parents because I believe our parents know best. And our parents
really just want us to be safe and away from any danger. Like any other kid in their childhood, I also disobey
and sometimes even quarrel with my parents because I don’t want to listen to their advice or sermons to me.
But in my heart I know that they are just worried and want to protect and guide me in my journey. With that,
I realized how lucky I am because of my parents, how they continue to shape and mold me to be a better
person, how to be a good son, sibling, and a friend, and how to be a religious person, to have faith in God. I
also realize to never give up in our painful times as it makes us stronger and also we need to be balanced in
everything that we do, in order for us just to stay in our lines and to avoid any trouble.
