I. Introduction
The world is changing from one condition to another, thus, there are revolutions of new
ideas that come up to the mind of every person especially in improving technology which can
help people to make their living better. As a result, modern technology has been bringing people
Nowadays, people can get hot news from any parts of the world very quickly by using
the E-mail and the Internet. Moreover, telephone-local or/and overseas plays a key role for
people to communicate with each other. They can also communicate by using Social
Social Networking Sites are currently being used regularly by millions of people. The
Internet is more than just a means of seeking information. People discovered that the Internet
could be used to connect with other people, whether for business or commercial purpose, make
new friends, reawaken old friends, and long lost relatives. The use of social networking sites
has been widespread that they have not only caught the attention of academic and industry
researchers worldwide but also us, in particular. Social networking sites are now being
investigated by numerous social science researchers and an increasing number of academic
commentators are becoming more and more interested in studying Facebook, Twitter, and other

Social networking sites also offer features like the profile. It contains the general
information about person’s, application plus the photos and videos posted by his/her friends.
Other SNS like Facebook contains games like Mobile Legends, the most popular game
nowadays. Due to the increased popularity, many professors and parents are asking if such can
affect the study habits as well as the academic performance of the students’ based on how
extent to which a student, teacher or institution has achieved their educational goals.
On the other hand, Oskouei (2010) contented that internet is advantageous to both
students and teachers if used as a tool of knowledge creation and dissemination. He stated that
the informational usage of technology promotes the efficiency of teachers and this increased

the overall conceptualization of the present study. Further, the data gathered were tallied,
Social media has exploded as a category of online discourse where people create
content, share it, bookmark it and network at a prodigious rate. Because of its ease of use,
speed and reach, social media is fast changing the public discourse in society and setting
trends and agenda in topics that range from the environment and politics to technology and the
entertainment industry (Asur and Huberman, 2010). In the last ten years, the online world has
changed dramatically, thanks to the invention of social media, young men and women now
exchange ideas, feelings, personal information, pictures and videos at a truly astonishing rate.
Seventy-three percent of wired American teens now use social media websites (Oberst, 2010).
Gafni and Deri (2012) used the term “social absorption” for students, where they
emphasized the role of social networks in socializing and opening new channels for discovering
Martn, (2008) & Lusk, (2010) share the same concept of social media. To them social
media is the use of Facebook, Blogs, Twitter, My Space and LinkedIn for the purpose of
communication, sharing photos as well as videos. However for the purpose of this study social
media is captured within the use of internet through Facebook, Whatsap, Twitter, Skype,
MySpace as well as Yahoo Messenger for communication sharing of ideas, sharing of photos
and videos by users. The increased use of Social Networking Websites has become an
international phenomenon in the past several years. What started out as a hobby for some
computer literate people has become a social norm and way of life for people from all over the
world (Boyd. 2007). Teenagers and young adults have especially embraced these sites as a
way to connect with their peers, share information, reinvent their personalities, and showcase
In the past years, social media websites have become common; giving young people a
new way to interact with each other and communicate with the world. Social networking became
popular between 2004 and 2006, after Facebook and MySpace were created. Facebook, for
example has over 500 million members and it is still growing and approximately 85% of
undergraduate students are Facebook users (Schneider, 2009). These numbers are expected
to grow since Facebook users will continue to grow. And this is not only true for Facebook,
numbers for YouTube users closely follow as well (University of New Hampshire, 2009).
friendship, social status, and sharing music, movies, video games, and other aspects of
adolescent culture.
As per Paul, Baker and Cochran (2012), the time spent on social media was dependent
on the attention span of the students. Attention span is the amount of time for which students
can concentrate on their study without getting distracted. They found out that, higher the
attention span, lower is the time spent by students on social media. As per Junco (2011), time
spent on Facebook was very strongly negatively related to the overall GPA of the students.
Kirschner and Karpinski (2010) found out that, over indulgence with social media can affect
As per Mingle and Adams (2015), Likert scale was used to survey the social media
effect on grade performance amongst 526 students. A Likert scale is a scale used for research
that involves questionnaire. Out of these 526 students, majority confirmed that the use of social
media affected their grades negatively. 62 (11.8%) students strongly agreed, while a majority of
students of strength 255 (48.5%) agreed that their grades dropped owing to the use of social
media. In addition, 60 (11.4%) students neither agreed nor disagreed. Finally, Impact of Social
Media on Academic Performance of Students 9(8.2%) and 106 (20.2%) students disagreed and
strongly disagreed respectively that their grades dropped, due to the use of social media.
Synthesis
Based from the data and information gathered from different literature and studies, the
researcher got some insights which one way help her to pursue this study.
The present study has the same bearing with the studies of Ito et al., 2009, Paul, Baker
and Cochran (2012), Junco (2011), Kirschner and Karpinski (2010) and Mingle and Adams
(2015) because they also discussed the extent of the use of using social networking sites and
