Learning Activity Sheet in Math 9 Week 6 Quarter 2

The document is a learning activity sheet for mathematics that discusses simplifying radical expressions using laws of exponents. It provides examples of changing expressions to radical form and simplifying them. There are three methods discussed for simplifying radicals: 1) removing perfect nth powers, 2) reducing the index to the lowest possible order, and 3) rationalizing the denominator of the radicand. Step-by-step solutions are shown for problems involving simplifying radical expressions in voltage and electrical current calculations.

SIMPLIFYING RADICAL EXPRESSIONS USING LAWS OF EXPONENTS

(Week 6)

General Reminders: Use this activity sheet with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on
any part of the activity sheet. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the
questions/exercises. Read the directions carefully before doing each task. Let your
parents/guardian return this activity sheet to the agreed place once you are through with it.
Always practice personal hygiene protocols at all times.

Since you are now capable of writing expressions with rational exponents as
radical as well as the different laws on radical, let us now learn how to simplify
radical expressions using this laws.

Learning Competency

B. Look at the pictures of the different household appliances below, what do you
notice at the back of it?

Recall your knowledge in Physics and TLE about the basic formula in finding the voltage and
electrical current. Select among the formula that involves radical expression.

Try to solve the following problems without the help of calculator. Express your answer in the
simplest form.

1. Given: Power (P)=900 watts

15
Resistance (R)= ohms
2
Problem: Find the electrical Current (I)

2. Given: P=96 watts

R=540 ohms
Problem: Find the voltage (V)

Questions:

1. What is the formula in finding the voltage and/or electrical current?

2. What laws of radical did you use in solving voltage and electrical current?
3. What difficulties did you encounter as you simplify radical expression found in
your solution?

2
Learn

By applying the law of radicals, the value of the resistance in problem 1 is 2 √ 30 A while the
value of the voltage in problem 2 is 7 2 √ 10 V. Study the solution below.

Problem 1:
Given: Power (P)=900 watts
15
Resistance (R)= ohms
2
Problem: Find the electrical Current (I)

√ 15
= √ 120
= √ 2∙ 2 ∙5 ∙ 6

=√ 22 ∙ √ 5∙ 6

=2√ 30 A

Problem 2:
Given: P=96 watts
R=540 ohms
Problem: Find the voltage (V)

Solution:

.V = √ PXR
= √ 96 ∙ 540
= √ 4 ∙ 4 ∙3 ∙ 2∙ 6 ∙ 6 ∙5 ∙ 3
= √ 4 2 ∙ 32 ∙6 2 ∙ 2∙ 5
= √ 4 2 ∙ √ 32 ∙ √ 62 ∙ √ 2∙ 5
= 4∙ 3∙ 6 √ 2∙ 5
= 72√ 10 V.

There are 3 methods of simplifying radicals
1. Removing Perfect nth powers
Break down the radicand into perfect and nonperfect nth powers and apply the
property
a
.√ ab=√a a ∙ √b b

2. Reducing the index to the lowest possible order

Express the radical into an expression with a rational exponent then simplify the
m n mn n m
exponent or apply the property . √ a= √ a= √ a
√ √
3. Rationalizing the denominator of the radicand

Rationalization is the process of removing the radical sign in the denominator

Points to remember:

The simplified form of a radical expression would require:

 NO prime factor of a radicand that has an exponent equal to or greater than

the index

 NO radicand contains a fraction

 NO denominator contains a radical sign

SIMPLIFYING RADICALS

a. Removing Perfect nth powers

Break down the radicand into perfect and nonperfect nth powers and apply the
property
a
.√ ab=√a a ∙ √b b

Example 1: Simplify √ 20 Example 2: Simplify √ 40
3
Solution: √ 2∙ 2 ∙5 Solution: √ (2 ∙ 2∙ 2∙ 5)
3 3
= √ 22 ∙ 5 =√ 2 ∙5
3 3 3
=√ 22 ∙ √ 5 =√ 2 ∙ √5
3
= 2 √5 =2 √ 5

Example 3: Simplify the square root of 8 x 5 y 6 z 13.

Solution:

√ 8 x 5 y 6 z13

=❑√ 4 ∙ 2 ∙ x 4 ∙ x ∙ y 6 ∙ ∙ z 12 ∙ z

4
=√ 4 ∙ √ 2∙ √ x 4 ∙ √ x ∙ √ y 6 ∙ √ z12 ∙ √ z

=2 x2 y 3 z 6 √ 2 xz

b. Reducing the index to the lowest possible order

Express the radical into an expression with a rational exponent then simplify the
exponent or apply the property .m √
